Trevor paused and inhaled a breath. “Yeah. See ya tomorrow.” He waved and walked back through the lot.

She hovered by the door just watching him. It was silly since the house was only a yard away, yet she was compelled to make sure he got inside.

He’d debated whether he should check in on her. Between Jack’s outburst and the previous fucked up events from the trailer, he wouldn’t be surprised if she hightailed it out of there. His saving grace? He had her keys.

It took ninety minutes to get his dad settled down and into bed. His father had good days and bad days. It was a crapshoot.

Caden headed for the back door and made his way through his yard, which backed up to the units. He’d made himself a deal—if the lights were off, he’d retreat home. As he rounded the building, a small glow from the front window shone through her blinds.

He drew in a deep breath and softly knocked. He stood silently, waiting for a few seconds before the door opened.

God, she was beautiful, even without trying. Her hair was tousled on the top of her head and her face clean of makeup. If she hadn’t been in bed, she was definitely heading there. She smiled and tilted her head.

“I was hoping you’d come by.”

He didn’t know if it was what she said or the tone she used, but something about her voice drew him immediately into her space, grasping her jaw and kissing her. The move caught her off guard, and she gasped against his lips. Her hands wrapped around his waist, snuggling her body against his chest.

Affection was uncommon ground for Caden. It had been so long since he’d felt it from anyone. Most women he’d dated didn’t bother with hugs or hand holding. He had been fine with it. It was never something he was overly comfortable with anyway. But with Marissa, he craved it.

Her fingers caressed his back, and he tugged her closer, never breaking away from the kiss. He hooked his arm around her waist and moved with her into her living room, kicking the door closed behind him.

He pulled away slightly and angled his back to the couch, sinking down into the cushion with Marissa straddling his lap.

“Are you here to stay?”

He pulled away, smiling. Nothing more he’d want to do than stay the night with her. Unfortunately, it wasn’t happening tonight. He drifted his knuckles over her chest up to her breasts and cupped her jaw.

“I gotta be up early. Got a stack full of papers on my desk. Kase is coming in tomorrow, and I got shit to finish up before then.” Caden pulled her against his chest. “Gotta stay close for my dad, too.”

“Oh.” Caden didn’t miss the hitch in her voice or the disappointment. “I understand. I’m sorry if I did anything to upset Jack earlier.”

“You didn’t.” He snorted. “Only person been able to get my dad showing signs of life again.”

God, how long had it been since a woman made him feel this way? Forever would be his guess. Even after Trevor’s mom, Caden had had women filter in and out of his bed, but none gave him the desire he felt for Marissa.

He curved his hand around her neck, pulling her lips against his for a long kiss. Once was not enough. He wanted her in a bed, his bed, all night. She gripped his neck and angled her head to deepen their kiss. Fuck, she kissed like a dream.

It ended too quickly, but it was for the best. He needed to be up early. Staying with her here was too much temptation. Another minute and he knew he’d give in.

“Don’t go,” she whispered against his mouth.

He tore his lips from her and hugged her into his chest, resting his mouth near her ear. “Not playing fair, babe.”

She shook against his chest, and he knew she was laughing. It was an amazing feeling. He pulled away and caught her smile.

“Maybe tomorrow?” she asked.

He grasped her neck, pulling her mouth down to him and sliding his tongue between her lips. “Definitely tomorrow.”

She climbed off his lap but clasped his hand as they walked to the door.

“Drake fixed the car. Battery was shot, so he replaced it. I’ll drop the keys by in the morning.”

“Oh.”

He glanced over his shoulder and noticed her shoulders sag as she stared down at the carpet. He spun around, wrapping his arm around her waist and tugging her against his chest. She wasn’t prepared for it and gasped.
