She nodded understanding what he was saying. He knew she would. “I get it, and I promise, I’d never say anything to him.”

For the first time since the conversation began, Caden’s features relaxed. “I know ya won’t. It’s why I told ya.”

Trust had to be earned, and Marissa had earned his.

“Wait, I don’t think I should.” She dug her heels into the ground, but it made no difference. Caden gripped her arm, pulling her into the house.

“Why the fuck not?”

“What about Jack and Trevor?”

Caden smirked. “Trev’s at a friends for the night, and Pop will have no problem you shacking up in my room, Riss. Remember, I am an adult.”

She sighed but moved along with him. “I don’t know.”

“Ya got no choice. No way your ass is staying in the unit until we have it fucking cleaned. There was a raccoon running around in there.”

“But…” They were halfway through the living room when Caden turned on her with a sharp scowl.

“Riss, ya got a fucking disease-infested wild animal fucking taking up space in your room. You’re not sleeping there.” He tugged her toward the stairs.

“You sure this isn’t just a ploy to get me in your bed?” she teased.

Caden glanced over his shoulder and quirked his brow. “Do I need a ploy?”

He’d never need a ploy to get her in his bed. She’d go willingly. Every. Single. Time. She followed behind him up the stairs in his house. She felt as though she was sneaking in. He opened his door and walked in with her following close behind. It wasn’t at all what she expected. Of course, it was old and dated. His bedding was plain without character, but along his dresser were pictures of Trevor from all stages of his life. There were several picture frames from school, ranging from kindergarten to present.

She glanced around the room, closing the door behind her. Caden dropped her bag at the edge of the bed and turned. He furrowed his brows.

“What?”

“I know it’s silly, but I feel like I’m sixteen sneaking into my boyfriend’s room after curfew.”

He grinned.

She walked over to the bed and sat down, watching him turn on the lights and duck into his bathroom. It didn’t seem like much to most people, but Caden had built a fairly good life for himself and Trevor, and a life which now included his dad. He’s one of the good ones.

He emerged from the bathroom and stopped in mid step under her stare.

“What?

“You’ve got it good here, Cade. You did all this.” She shrugged with a smile.

“Ya think so?”

She nodded and crossed her legs, sitting on the bed.

He smiled and glanced down at the floor. “Started this with one half-ass truck and Drake willing to fix it.” He snorted. “This should have failed in a month, but it didn’t. Got another truck, enough cash to build the garage. It seemed like a good deal, and for a while it was. Then Pop got sick, fucking medical bills piling up. Nearly went broke just paying for insurance, which barely covered shit. Few years back got into some financial shit. The business was steady but slow, and I got into debt.”

He sighed and glanced up at her. “That’s why I took the deal with Kase and the club to partner up. Otherwise, I would’ve lost it all.”

“Is it such a bad thing? With the club?”

“No. Just knowing I needed them to bail me out, it sucks.”

“But they wouldn’t have wanted to get in with you unless you had something to offer them, right?”
