Piper

It’s almostnoon by the time Matthew and I drag ourselves out of bed. The scent of fresh coffee should have alerted us that something was wrong, but we were so consumed with our newly found bliss as an official couple to take notice. It’s not until we shuffle down the stairs that we see trouble waiting for us in the form of our very annoyed parents.

Stopping dead in my tracks I flash Matthew a ‘we’re doomed’ look and try to put on a smile that doesn’t make me look incredibly guilty. I really hope we weren’t too loud before we came downstairs. The thought of them hearing me scream ‘oh God yes, fuck me Matt,’ is enough to turn my cheeks pink!

My Dad is the first one to speak, breaking the uncomfortable silence. “I think you both know why we’re here and why we’re very upset with you.” He tries to sound like a stern parent, but the role doesn’t suit him. My mother was always the disciplinarian because Leo just wasn’t cut out for it. Even after twenty plus years of being a parent, he’s still very laid back. Though, normally I’m the good child that doesn’t get into trouble! Matthew it appears is wearing off on me…

The two of us exchange a nervous glance. Did they just come by to say hello and overhear us? That’s not the way we wanted them to find out about our relationship! I’m just starting to really panic when Vanessa gives up on letting Dad handle the conversation and chimes in herself.

“I don’t understand what got into you two!” She starts, making my head spin as I’m now 100% certain that the cat is out of the bag. “How could you blow off the party, you knew what it meant to me and the town! Where the hell did you disappear to last night?!”

I very nearly flop to the floor and start giggling madly. Not because anything she said is particularly funny, but because compared to what I thought she was going to say was a hundred times worse! Of course, there’s no way in hell we’re about to confess to having a big fight and then fucking on the Barracuda. Not even after a week of torture would I cop to that! Instead I nervously stammer, “well, we had a bit of a disagreement and…” I’m not even sure how to finish that sentence. I look to Matthew for help, hoping he’ll be able to pick up where I left off.

“Okay, there’s no use lying about it now,” he lets out a sigh and I feel a surge of panic. Oh for the love all things holy don’t mention the Barracuda, I think!

“Piper and I have been seeing each other romantically,” he blurts, giving them a sheepish grin.

The expressions of shock and befuddlement on their faces make my panic flare into outright terror. They’re going to kill us I know it! “It actually started a long time ago,” I quickly add, “before Matt ever shipped off, we…” I trail off, not about to finish that sentence.

They look at one another, then back at us. My Dad opens his mouth as though he’s about to comment, but promptly shuts it again. It’s Vanessa who finally comes up with something to say. “Well, we weren’t expecting that…” she lets out what sounds like a chuckle mixed with a sigh of relief. “You two had us worried to be honest, you’d been acting so strangely and then you bailed last night which seemed even more strange!”

Leo nods, finally finding his voice again. “I know it’s a bit weird and the town is going to gossip about it for years, but,” he smiles at us, “if you two are happy, that’s what matters in the end.”

That urge to collapse to the floor and giggle like an idiot returns. It makes me so happy that we spilled the beans and our parents aren’t going to hate us! Grasping onto the exuberance, I hurry to give them both a hug. Matthew joins me, hugging his Mom and then shaking Leo’s hand. Feeling that weight lift off my shoulders makes me wonder if not carrying huge secrets around is one of the reasons Vanessa is so damn chipper.

“What do you say about some breakfast?” Vanessa asks, a smiling lighting up her face. “Or do you two have any other news you’d like to drop on us?” She laughs.

I start to answer no, but Matthew grabs my hand, giving it a light squeeze as he says, “actually, Piper has something she wants to tell you, Leo.”

I stare at him, completely confused until he leans over and whispers in my ear. My eyes go wide and I shake my head, my cheeks flushing a deep red. “No, no I don’t…” I see my Dad and Vanessa watching me curiously.

“Whatever it is, Piper, you know you can tell me,” Leo presses gently.

“Well,” I’m not sure how to get the words out, I look over to Matthew and he squeezes my hand again. With everyone staring at me I know there’s no getting out of it now, besides, if coming clean about our relationship feels this good, getting my secret dream off my chest has to feel even better by comparison. Right?

“I figured out what I want to do,” I start tentatively. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” now that I’m so close to sharing a bit of excitement flashes to life and the rest comes out in a rush. “I want to be a mechanic like you. I know, I know,” I add, suddenly afraid he’ll think it’s a terrible idea, “it’s not proper for a young lady, but—”

My Dad steps over to me, pulling me into his arms and giving me a crushing hug. “That’s your mother’s ignorant, tired line, sweet pea,” he tells me sternly. “If you want to be a mechanic and work at the shop, then I’ll help you however I can.” He pushes me out to arms length and I see what I think might be tears in his eyes. It’s gone an instant later as he gives me a mischievous grin. “Besides, with you and Matty running the shop it means I can finally retire!”

We all share a laugh and then Vanessa drags us all into the kitchen to make breakfast. I couldn’t have hoped for a better start to my day. Matthew at my side, our parents with us and my dream finally out in the open and about to come true. I feel like my new life with Matthew is finally beginning and I can’t wait to see where the road leads us.
