Page 13 of Holding Avery

Before I can reach for Murphy’s arm to hold him back, he’s already grabbed Dillion by the front of his shirt.

“You watch your fucking mouth, Dillion!”

“Maybe you should watch yours, you fucker. Avery isn’t some cheap fuck for you to…”

Before Dillion can continue Murphy’s hit him hard enough to knock him to the floor.

“Oh my God!” I start to go to find out if Dillion is alright, but an arm made of steel wraps around my waist and lifts me off the floor. “Put me down, Murphy! You hurt Dillion! Murphy!”

“You stay out of this Avery!”

“Yeah, Avery. You stay out of this.” Dillion is up on his hands and knees shaking his head and wiping his hand across his lip.

“Don’t act like you can tell her what to do, you shithead. She’s not yours to dictate to.” When did Murphy grow so fucking big? How have I never realized he could toss me around as easily as he seems to be?

“She’s not yours either, is she Murph?” I catch Dillion’s eyes and can tell he’s not upset that something happened between me and Murphy. He’s mad for me. Because of what happened with Murphy and me when I moved out.

Murphy makes a move to put me down and I can already tell he’s going to make another go at Dillion. As soon as I have my feet under me, I step in front of Murphy and wrap my hands around the hem of the shirt.

“If you keep fighting, I’ll take this shirt off and go home the way I came here.”

“You are home!” Murphy bellows but I don’t back down just because he’s yelled at me. If I did that we would have never been friends.

“I mean it, Murphy. I’ll go back to that apartment. And walk the entire way.”

He stares me in the eyes before I see the fight leave him. “Fine, but you better tell him to watch his damned mouth.”

“Tell him to put some damned clothes on. His pecker’s hanging out and I’m afraid I’ll get it confused when I hit his face since both of them look same.” I turn and stare down at Dillion who seems to think I need further clarification. “He’s a dick head.”

“Yes, I’m aware of what you mean, Dillion.”

I back away from Murphy now that the tension in the room seems to have calmed down. At least for now.

Chapter Thirteen

Murphy

Me and Dillion come to a tentative peace with a promise to beat the hell out of each other later when Avery isn’t paying attention. Dillion agrees to go with me tomorrow to pick up her things from the snake pit she moved to before he leaves, leaving me and Avery alone. I make us dinner and we sit at the table to eat it. Normally we would be camped out in front of the TV but I thought this meal should be symbolic - our first meal as a couple.

I watch everything about Avery, so I know right away she’s not really eating but instead picking at her food.

“You feeling okay, Sunshine.”

She nods but doesn’t look up to meet my gaze.

“Then why aren’t you eating?”

“I’m just…trying to figure out how everything is supposed to work. With you and me.”

“Let’s talk about things.” Her eyes come up to mine and I see a little bit of fear hit her eyes.

“I…I don’t think…”

“What did you like? What did you not like? What can I do better?”

“What?”

“Critique me. Come on, tell me what I need to work on.”
