“So now that you two have stopped tiptoeing around the fact you both love one another do you think you’ll have a quick wedding or will we have time to plan this thing out.”

“Oh…um, I…it’s not like that between us, Hetty. We’re not…I’m not sure Murphy feels that way about me. It’s…new and we don’t even know if we…I don’t think he feels that way about me.”

I start to step around the corner to tell her how things really are when my mom stops me, “Are you serious right now?”

“Well, it…kind of wasn’t planned…”

My mom starts laughing before sobering up, “Honey, there is nothing that goes on with you that Murphy hasn’t meticulously planned out. He has gone to great lengths to have you all for himself. He’s been in love with you since he first saw you when you were fourteen. He waited for you to turn eighteen since he turned eighteen first but child, that man has been yanking strings since before you even knew who he was. He’s the one who made his father hire your mother.”

“What?” I wish I could see her face. Her voice sounds like she’s confused and a little lost, and I don’t like it.

“He’s been taking care of you and going out of his way to protect you from the moment he laid eyes on you all those years ago.”

“Why did he bring another girl here then? If he loved me so much?”

This time I hear the hurt in her voice and answer before my mom can.

“I never thought you saw me like that. I didn’t want to drive you away by being so…intense.” Avery jumps and Mom gives me a big grin and thumbs up. “I didn’t do shit with her. I promise. As soon as you shut the door, I dumped her on the floor and told her to leave. Or I would have kicked her out right away if mom hadn’t come in at the same time.”

“But you still brought her here. You really couldn’t tell…that I love you.”

“You left me!”

“I had to. I…it killed me to…think of you with someone else. I thought I could do it. I thought I could pretend but then I saw…”

Tears slip down her cheeks and hit me like punches in the gut. I eat up the distance between us and take her face in my hands so I can drop kisses on her mouth and cheeks.

“I was an idiot and I’ll regret putting you through that for the rest of my life but if you let me, I’ll spend the rest of my days trying to make it up to you - always keeping a smile on your face and never making you question how much I love you again.”

This time when her arms wrap around me and our lips meet, there’s a deeper feeling coursing through the embrace, a deeper sense of belonging and home.

Chapter Seventeen

Avery

“Marry me.”

My head is whirling so fast I can’t tell if any of this is real or just a wonderfully magical dream. And now he asks -demands- that I marry him. I have no words.

“What?”

“Let’s get married before we find out if we are or aren’t.”

I don’t have to ask him what the ‘are or aren’t’ means. I know but my eyes slide to the side to find out if his mom is listening. She’s not sitting in the chair she was sitting in before when she told me and started all of this…

“Marry me. Before we find out, so after when we are, you don’t think it’s because of that.”

“But…wait! You said when, not if. Do you already know we are?”

He gives me a wicked grin, “Baby, as much cum as I’ve dumped in you over the last couple of days, there is like no way you aren’t pregnant. I fuck you in our sleep for fuck’s sake, Sunshine!”

Our mouths meet and tongues spar as we hold each other and kiss. Hetty sticks her head back in the room and smiles at us. Right behind her is Dillion with a hopeful look on his face.

“So…is everything good! Do we have a wedding to plan?”

Instead of letting me go or answering his mom, Murphy sweeps me up in his arms and starts walking towards the bedroom.

“Murphy!”
