“Relax, you aren’t in your gown yet and no one said there was a rule about seeing you in your lingerie. I had to come check on you. Mom said you weren’t feeling well…and she also gave me this.”
He holds up a box trimmed in pink with a baby on the front of it. My mouth falls open and I stare at it.
“Murphy…do you…think…?”
I’m too nervous to even finish the sentence. I’ve still not had a full-on period yet but I had spotting around the time I calculated I would start. Seeing the little drops of blood on the pad nearly broke my heart. Over the course of two weeks, I had fallen in love with the idea of being pregnant with Murphy’s baby.
“I know, sunshine. But you haven’t had a ‘real’ period since, and you know what all the books say. It could have been implantation bleeding. Missing one might be just a coincidence but today marks two whole months.”
I gnaw at my bottom lip and take his hand.
“Let’s try. No pressure. If you aren’t you can celebrate with a glass of champagne, if you are…”
I take the box and both of us read the instructions. One of the best things about being in love with your best friend is going through all of life’s ups and downs with one another. The three minutes it takes before the test is going to drive me crazy…luckily we don’t have to wait the full three minutes. The stick starts showing the lines saying I’m pregnant within the first one.
“Oh my God, Murphy? Does it…do you think…?” He takes me in his arms and drops kisses on my upturned face.
“I do! I’ve already scheduled an appointment with Dr. Albright as soon as the office opens on Monday. Right before we leave on our honeymoon.”
“You did? But…how could you know for sure?”
“The same way I know I love you…I felt it with every fiber of my heart.”
And who could ask for a better answer than that! Murphy always knows exactly what to say to make everything perfect. He always has.
I especially like it when he says the best thing he’s ever done in his life is holding me. The best thing I ever did…was fall in love with my best friend!
