“Yeah. I, um, don’t want to keep him waiting.”

“Sure. Sure, you don’t. Let me get the door for you.” And help you the fuck out of it.

I always knew one day I would have to let her go but fuck me! I didn’t expect it to be so damned soon. She slips through the door but doesn’t wait to find out if I’m going to come out with her or not. There used to be a time when both of us wouldn’t make a move without the other. But everything changes, I guess.

She grabs a cab and is gone without a backward glance before I can even step through the damned doors.

“Well, damn! That didn’t work out like I thought it would.”

I look over at my mom who is standing beside me looking at the back of the departing cab too.

“Is that why you called me back to the office early?”

“I was hoping both of you wouldn’t be so fucking stupid but…”

I give her a sideways look but don’t say anything before looking back at the moving traffic. She’s already gone. Leaving me to stand here with empty hands and a hollow feeling inside.

She didn’t look…like she normally does. Instead, she looked tired and more fragile than she’s ever looked since I first laid eyes on her all those years ago. It might have been the bad lighting, but it also looked like she had dark smudges under her eyes. Another sign she isn’t getting enough sleep. And who the hell is the guy she’s meeting up with? How long has that been a thing and is he the one who put that sad, lost look in her eyes?

Or was it me?

Chapter Five

Murphy

I brace myself and knock on the door. I shouldn’t be doing this. I should leave her alone and let her do what she wants to do. But here I am. Standing outside her apartment after having tracked her down like a hound chasing down a fox. And isn’t she just the cutest little fox ever.

The door opens and I am surprised to see a shirtless guy standing on the other side. What the hell?

“Can I help you, man?”

“Uh, hey. Hi. I’m looking for Avery?”

“Who?”

“Avery Roberts. Is she here?”

Who the hell is this guy and why does he not know Avery? Is this even the right place? Maybe I’m not as good at hunting as I thought I was.

Another guy walks behind the first one who answered the door wearing even less than the one who answered the damned door. “Yo, he’s looking for CG.”

“CG?” Why do they call her that? Is that a cute little pet name? Why are there two of them?

“Crying Girl. We call her the Crying Girl.”

Recognition hits the first guy’s face, “Oh! CG, the girl who cries all the time.”

What the FUCK?

“Why is she crying all the time?”

“How am I supposed to know, man? She stays in her room all the time.” The guy steps back so I can come in and points down a hallway. “She’s in the third room down the hall. Good luck, man. You’re gonna need it.”

I don’t knock once I get to the door. Or even slow down long enough to consider what I’m going to say once I walk in. And my temper rises even higher when I realize the fucking door wasn’t even locked. Anyone could just walk right in.

And my anger doesn’t dampen at all at what I find once I walk inside. I immediately shut the door once I spot the reason I’m here lying in the bed…sound fucking asleep. But she’s not just sleeping. She’s in the middle of the bed curled around a pillow wearing nothing but a pair of panties and a thin ass shirt. A shirt that is so damned thin, I can see the swell of her breasts through it. That along with the curve of her ass has more than just my temper rising.

“What the hell?!”
