Erin sighed, and her voice went warm and fuzzy. “But she’s got a winner now, right? Can’t beat that.”

“Fine, she got a good one now and yes, your brother is a sweetheart, but she went through some yuck. What about you and Vera’s father? He was a piece of work.”

The very few details about him weren’t five-star reviews, more like the one-star where you demanded your money back. Except he unintentionally gave her Vera so her hatred toward the nameless guy was somewhat diminished. But the lustre on him was well worn off.

“That may be true, but I’ve come out to the other side. Not all guys are bad.”

“I’m not saying guys are bad, I’m just saying relationships aren’t worth it. Men are only good for one thing.”

Erin burst out laughing. “Oh, sweetie. They are worth more than just sex. Trust me on this. Is that what’s bugging you?”

“No. I can handle men. I think I just…” I sighed. “I think this guy’s more into any kind of possibility of a relationship than I am, and I may have accidentally led him to believe that.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Honestly, I didn’t mean it. I was, I mean, I am, well…” A deep gust of air filled my lungs. “I’m using him for information.”

“Again, why?”

“He knows someone that I need to know.”

“So just introduce yourself to that person and leave the market guy out of the equation. Unless…” She sat on the stool and gave me a wise look. Suddenly, her eyes flashed as they widened. “In your little quest for info, you’ve started developing feelings for the market guy?”

Like a baby bull, I snorted. “He’s a pathological flirt. You’ve seen it.”

“Sure, whatever. Doesn’t matter though as he’s clearly gotten under your skin.” Erin was practically beaming, like I’d won the lottery or something.

I shook my head. “It’s not true.”

“Yeah. You keep telling yourself that.”

“I will.” I stood for good measure, putting my feet on the floor. “Why would I be interested in him? There’s too much of an age difference, and we don’t have much in common.”

She pursed her lips together. “Sure. Sure. You went golfing together, which I happen to know you love.”

“But the whale-watching thing? We’re total opposites. I’m terrified of the water.”

“You went though?”

“Because I need information from him.”

“Maybe at the start that was your plan, but I think somewhere, something changed.”

“Well, you’re wrong.” There, I had the last word.

“David and I were like that, remember? I was just exacting a little revenge. Now look at us – talking about the future.”

“What?” I pulled my stool closer and sat down, hooking my feet on the legs.

“You’re not here to discuss my relationship, right now, we’re talking about yours.”

“There is no relationship.”

“No?” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Let me ask you something, if you were closer to his age, or he was closer to yours, would you consider him someone you’d be attracted to?”

“Oh, I’m attracted to him, there’s no doubt about that.”

Her smile stretched from ear to ear. “Umm hmm.”
