“Agreed.” I pushed him up and off, sitting beside him on the bed. “But now we need to clean up and get over to the bonfire. Your family awaits.”

He patted my ass as I walked with a little saunter over to the bathroom. “And I can’t wait to show you off.”

We swapped side-eyed glances as we washed, and I ran a brush through my hair. It was okay for him to have that tousledjust-fuckedhairdo, it wasn’t okay for me to show up that way.

Dressed, we sauntered back into the kitchen and to the door. He had it opened when I remembered something I had made.

“Wait.” I retrieved a box from the refrigerator. “I made chocolates.”

“Seriously?” He tenderly lifted the lid, revealing a batch of freshly made truffles. “May I? I should test them before we hand them out.”

“Sure.” I had taste tested them several times over too, just to make sure.

He grabbed the nearest one and popped it into his mouth, slowly chewing.

“They okay?”

Even during my taste testing, I hadn’t let it sit in my mouth that long. Just long enough to make sure the initial flavour was great, the aftertaste lingered, and the chocolate as a whole was smooth and silky. It worried me a tad how long Landon was chewing.

“Ohmygod, that’s fantastic. That’s the best chocolate I’ve ever had.” He licked his lips and swiped a hand over when he swallowed down the last bite.

“I don’t believe that.”

“You should. Don’t tell Sylvia about these.” He tapped the box lid. “You could put her out of business.”

“Considering she’s a bake shop and this is chocolate, I think we’re safe.”

He quickly popped a kiss onto my slightly swollen lips. “Shall we go?”

“Sure, what do I have to lose?”

“Absolutely nothing.” He beamed. “But there’s so much to gain.”

Like a sister? A family connection?

I wasn’t aware I’d have to war over both.

Chapter Eleven

Landon parked alongside a strip of houses with muted pastel colours where the endless pacific ocean stretched out behind them.

The weather had cleared, and the lowering sun on the horizon had finally made an appearance after the grey clouds thinned. It was truly postcard perfect.

“So, who’s all going to be here? I should be prepped with a who’s who, so I don’t screw anything up.” For some odd reason, my insides felt like they were vibrating, and my heart was pounding awfully fast.

“You’ll be fine.” Landon rubbed my thigh.

A ball of tightness firmly nestled into my gut, and I inhaled sharply. “Maybe I should offer the chocolates first to win everyone over.”

“You won’t need to. Just be yourself, and you’ll fit in just fine. No need to worry.”

“Just being myself is the first set of problems,” I whispered under my breath, but I sensed a tiny bit of apprehension rolling off Landon despite his reassuring words.

“You okay?” Landon gave my hand a squeeze.

I face him, taking in every inch of his face. Tonight was a big deal, yet both of us were seeing it differently.

A quick glance over to the picturesque houses and a fresh set of nerves washed over me. I was going to come face to face with Cedar, which had happened many times before finding out our connection, and once since I found out it washer, but still, tonight was the night I was going to interact with her. Maybe have a conversation too, at least more thanlet me get your order for you.
