She snapped her fingers. “That’s it! Well, welcome. Any girlfriend of Landon’s is a friend of ours. Please make yourself at home. Food and drinks are back by the house.”

“I brought chocolates.” Of all the stupid things to say, it had to be that? I lifted the container and handed it to her.

She took them from my hand with a warm smile and pried back the lid. “Homemade?”

I nodded.

“Wow, thank you. These won’t last long I can promise you that.”

“You’re most welcome.”

Landon waved me over. Beside him was the younger version of himself, but from a distance, they could’ve been twins.

“Eric.” I stuck out my hand before he could attempt a hug. “Have you hit any more balls since last week?”

“Just once, over in Seattle at Jefferson Park. Ever played there?”

I shook my head. “I’ve never left the island.”

“Not even to Vancouver?” The same quizzical expression as Landon always got appeared on Eric’s face.

“Is that on the island?” I laughed in jest.

Landon tipped his head as his brows knit together and the left side of his smile turned up a notch. “I really want to know more about your upbringing.” He nudged Eric. “She doesn’t celebrate Christmas or birthdays.”

“Seriously?”

Obviously, it was starting to rub Landon the wrong way in how different our childhoods were.

Eric laughed and took a sip from his bottle of beer. “Well, don’t let my wife know. She celebrates half-birthdays.”

My gaze volleyed between the brothers. “What’s a half birthday?”

“You’ll love it.” Eric patted me on the shoulder. “Right, Lily?”

The fully pregnant lady walked over and sighed, leaning against her husband. “What am I agreeing to?”

“Libby’s half-birthday.”

“Oh my god, is that today?” His face lit up brighter than the bonfire and she suddenly straightened to her full height.

Landon answered amazingly quick. “It would be around July first.”

“Oh dang. But I’ll add that to my list. All the more reason to celebrate. Ooh. There’ll be fireworks too.”

Landon bounced his nephew on his hip, and I couldn’t help but smile at the affection pouring out of him, out of myboyfriend.

Yeah, it still sounded weird.

Eric took a sip of his beer and offered to take his son.

“No way. Until he makes a mess, he’s good with me. You’re happy with Unca Dandan, aren’t you, Henry?” He tickled his nephew’s stomach, and an ear-piercing squeal came out of the tiny body as he jerked his body back. Landon was quick and strong though, and Henry never slipped or fell.

“He’s cute.” I watched the little guy laugh with his uncle.

“He’s an escape artist, so if you put him down, watch him.” Eric kept a side-eye on his child.

My gaze lasered on the little guy. How fast could the little guy possibly run? He had stubby little legs. My after-school kids on the other hand…
