“But I need to double check on the–”

“Summer.” Adam cupped her chin and turned her so she looked him in the eyes. “Breathe. It’ll be fine.”

“I know, but–”

“Everyone is where they are supposed to be.” He took the clipboard from her hand and scanned it thoroughly. “Amber is upstairs with Iris, helping her into her wedding dress. Libby is also up there. So the bride is in good hands. I do believe Antonio and Jesse are with Holden.”

“You don’t know?” A ribbon of panic wove its way through her words.

He scrunched up his face. “All I know for a fact is that Holden’s not alone, which is great because his sister, Myriam, informed him that his dad was still refusing to attend.”

“Oh shit.” How that would hurt. Summer covered her heart with her hand. “That sucks.”

“As far as I know, I think Benjamin is also with him. Holden’s surrounded by people who love and care for him.”

Benjamin and Holden had that in common; both were estranged from their families, and both had walked away from family fortunes. Whereas Benjamin had done so years ago, Holden had only recently, within the last year, made that difficult choice but neither guy regretted it.

“Well…” She leaned over Adam’s arm to check what was next on the list. “The bride and groom are taken care of, that’s good.”

“And the most important.”

She nodded, tugging at the hem of her dress. “Of course.”

“Everything else will snap into place, and if it doesn’t, it’s not the end of the world. The important pieces are all ready to go…” He shrugged and reached for her hand. “And the nitty gritty pieces, well, no one will remember.”

“I’ll remember.”

Adam sighed. “But whose day is it?”

“Iris and Holden’s.”

“All they’re likely to remember is getting married, being surrounded by their family and friends. They won’t remember if one table is missing a fork or a centrepeice, or if the ribbon on the back of a chair falls off.”

“But…”

“No buts. You, Mia, Iris, and Amber have put a lot of work into this. You need to trust it’ll all come together.”

“But.”

“Trust.” Adam looked at her like a man deeply in love, and willing to step up and control the situation. “Breathe with me.”

She did. He always knew how to calm her down, and together as the world faded away, they took a minute to inhale and exhale.

“I love you, Adam.”

“I love you too. Now I’m going to do your triple-check. You call upstairs to the ladies and see if they need anything. Everything else will be fine.” He gave her a wink before he walked away.

“Okay.”

Erin dashed through the main doors of Amber’s Ale damn near breathless, David hot on her heels carrying Vera in his left arm. It was the perfect image of a family, and Erin, despite the harried expression on her face, had a jubilant demeanour, and was the picture of true happiness.

“Tables are decorated. Every couple gets a centerpiece.” She stopped and centered herself, breathing in and out.

“And they look amazing,” David added and set Vera on her feet to grab Erin’s hand. “She did a remarkable job.”

“Aw, thanks, honey.” Erin blushed and focused on her man briefly before turning her attention back to Summer. “Anything else I can do?”
