Molly collapses forward, muttering a barely audible, “Holy shit.”

I gradually pull back. “Let me see it.”

Flexing her abdomen, she offers me a perfect view of the mess I’ve made. She jerks with a hiss of pleasure when I take one finger and stuff the white trail dripping down her slit back inside. “If it wasn’t a terrible idea to get you pregnant, I’d hide your birth control from you, too.”

She’s nibbling her lip when I pull her up from the couch. “That is a terrible idea.”

I cradle her naked body in my arms and walk us through the manor to her room, but I don’t stop until we’ve reached the shower.

Vulnerability seizes me as I turn the hot water on and help her in after me. I place her in front of me, blocking the brunt of the steady stream, and then grab the soap. My hands glide along her curves as I cup her breasts and wash between her legs.

“Have you ever thought about having kids?” I ask hesitantly.

She laughs under her breath, amused by my curiosity while I massage her body, leaving trails of bubbles across her skin. “Yes.”

“How many?”

Molly cocks a brow at me, but I sternly twist her back around.

“Three would be nice.” With a heavy sigh, she says, “But that’s probably not something we should discuss… Right?”

“Right,” I reluctantly agree.

My body doesn’t seem strong enough to contain what I feel when Molly relaxes into me. I place my hands on her lower belly, and her slender fingers thread through mine.

We stand under the hot spray, and for the first time since I was a young man, the backs of my eyes sting with tears.

I always wanted to be a father, a husband, and it’s undeniably cruel that I met Molly thousands of miles from my home, in circumstances that don’t afford us a future together.

We take turns washing each other, and she’s yawning by the time I get her in her pajamas, don a pair of sleep shorts, and tuck us both between the sheets.

I nuzzle the back of her neck, loving her little giggle when I tug her into my warmth.

“Good night, Rowan,” she mutters sleepily.

“Good night, kitten.”

Her breathing gradually slows as she drifts off to sleep, and though it’s pointless to do so, I imagine the life we could have if things were different.

In those last few moments before I fall into the deepest sleep I’ve gotten in years, I think about how lucky I am to have this woman in my bed.

In my house.

In my heart.

Chapter Twenty-One

Molly

Two weeks before the wedding…

I wake up with a satisfying stretch, pleasantly sore from another night of passion with Rowan. He’s insatiable; even the slightest touch can send him racing to the bedroom with me in tow, and it makes me feel undeniably desirable and sexy.

Gia called this morning to tell us she’s planned a surprise engagement party tomorrow evening at seven o’clock. She merely laughed when I informed her that it’s not a surprise if she lets us in on the secret, but at least now we’ve finally secured every detail needed for the wedding and the requirements for Rowan’s inheritance.

I roll over to find a folded purple card on top of his pillow, and I nibble the edge of a smile, excited for what today will bring.

His handwriting is neatly spaced as I read the note.
