Page 59 of More Than Promises

Her bare feet slap the marble as she darts for the back hallway. I’m hot on her heels, but before I can grab her, she hooks a right into her room and slams the door in my face.

Blistering hot adrenaline courses through my veins when I twist the knob. “Open this door, right now.”

“No!”

“Fine,” I grit. “I’ll just go around to the other side.”

Her response is distant and muffled. “Too bad I’ve already locked it.”

My chest vibrates with a cross between a roar and a shout. “Why are you running from me?”

“Why are you watching me swim?”

“Because this is my house, and I’ll do whatever I damn well please.”

“Oh, yeah? Well, I don’t consent to you watching me. How about that?” I hear an arrogant huff from behind the door.

“Need I remind you it was your rule that we keep our clothes on?” I’m practically shouting now.

To my left, two sets of prying eyes blink at me in shock, and I sneer at the young maids, who scatter with startled gasps.

Blood pounds in my ears from the chase, and there’s no amount of counting that could keep these carnal urges at bay.

“Open. The. Door.” I scrub a hand down my face before grumbling a forced, “Please.”

After a moment, the lock snicks, and the door swings open to reveal a pitch-black room. With what little light filters in from the hall, I can barely make out a shadowed figure in the far-back corner.

“Running from me isn’t wise…” I kick the door closed, and the cool temperature of the room does little to dowse this feral, pulsing ache. “You’ve avoided me for long enough, and I demand to know why.”

“Just tell me what you want, and go away,” she clips, swathed in darkness that my eyes gradually adjust to.

“As long as you’re living in this house, you’ll have dinner with me. No more excuses.”

There’s a beat of silence before she says, “I’m good, thanks.”

Her snarky tone forces me past the point of keeping myself in check. “It’s not up for debate. You’ll join me, or our deal is off.”

A gasp, and then a surly, “You wouldn’t dare.”

At the moment, I’m second guessing my morals, but then, I’ve craved this fire of hers all week, and if a little cat and mouse is all it takes to drive me to the brink of lust, then the next month and a half will be nothing short of hell.

“Are you being taken care of?” I ask, taking another step toward her.

“Yes.”

“And the manor… Has it been suitable for you?”

“Y-yes,” she breathes shakily.

It’s too dark to see her face, and what a shame that is, because Molly is a fiercely beautiful woman.

“Then tell me,” I say, lifting a finger to her chin. Each of her exhales glide warmly across my hand, sending shockwaves to my groin. “If it’s my attention you want, it’s yours.”

I’m halted by her hand on my chest. “Don’t make another move.”

Her breaths hasten, and my blood burns with an archaic need to claim her. If the lights were on, I’m certain my vision would be tunneling, but despite keeping me at a distance, Molly doesn’t lower her hand.

I tsk, wishing I could see that sour expression of hers. “By the time you finish wondering if this is a bad idea, I’ll have already won.”
