Her arms wrapped around my neck as she pulled me closer, doing the same thing I always did—never leaving an inch of space between us. A small smile touched her lips as she pressed her hand to my cheek. “I can’t imagine my life without you. Promise me you’ll never leave again.”

“Never.”

“Don’t make me come for you again. You nearly broke me the last time.”

I swallowed hard, hearing the hurt in her voice. Although we’d had this discussion multiple times before, it still broke me every time I heard the pain laced in her voice. “I swear to you, Kate. You’ll always have me, in body and wretched soul.”

“You have a beautiful soul, even as black as it is. You’re mine, and that won’t change.”

“Then prove it,” I said, taking her mouth with mine. “Always yours, sweetheart. I’m always yours.”

“That wasn’t at all awkward,” I muttered as we got into the elevator at Reed Security.

“So, close your ears,” Knight grumbled.

“I would have, but you were so fucking loud. Geez, even the patients in the waiting room were blushing. I was standing right outside the fucking door.”

“No one told you to.”

I hated that Knight took such a cavalier approach to practically everything about him having sex in public. Not that he would ever let anyone see Kate naked, but he didn’t care if anyone heard him fucking his wife. In his eyes, that meant they would all know who she belonged to.

“What should I have done? Leave and let someone walk in on you and Kate? Then, I would have a gunshot victim to take to the morgue. That’s not high on my list of things to do today.”

“And following me around is?”

The doors whooshed open and I stepped into the lobby, narrowly avoiding being hit by a throwing star that embedded itself in the wall. I swung my gaze around to find the culprit, but all I heard was giggling before the little rascal disappeared.

“Fucking menaces,” I muttered.

“It was your kid,” Knight smirked as he strode inside. “And probably the one you don’t like.”

“I like all my kids,” I shouted after him, chasing to catch up. “Are we gonna talk about this resolution?”

“What resolution?” he asked, walking into the conference room and taking a seat near the screens at the front.

“The one where you stop chasing Kate everywhere she goes.”

“Yeah, I worked that out with her.”

“How so?”

“She asked me not to and I agreed.”

“So, you’re gonna let her go out on her own?”

He huffed out a laugh. “Sure.”

Somehow, I didn’t believe him. “Knight, this obsession?—”

“Is taking a turn. Since she’s not happy with me following her around, I’ll have to change tactics.”

“This isn’t a battle.”

His steely gaze met mine in challenge. “How so?”
