“Oh? That’s all you have to say about it?”

“What should I say?”

“I don’t know,” I said incredulously. “How about Gee, that sounds really dangerous. We should stop him.”

“Why would I stop him? I told him to contact Ryan.”

She walked away, completely ignoring our conversation. I chased her as she walked around killing the lights throughout the training center, trying to reason with her.

“And you didn’t think maybe that was a bad idea?”

“Why? Better protection for the town.”

“And the possibility that someone innocent could get hurt.”

She spun around, eyeing me inquisitively. “What’s changed?”

“Nothing.”

“Something has. You’ve always gone to the extreme with protection, but now you’re worried about the town?”

“We’ve always kept things under our roof,” I argued. “He involved Sean, for Christ’s sake!”

“Yeah, I know. I told him he should get approval from him first. Not that he’s the chief, but he will be one day. It’s better to have him on our side.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Lola, the man set up machine guns around town. There are sensors on every road leading into the village. That’s insane.”

But she just shrugged me off. “If you don’t like it, talk with Cap.”

I rolled my eyes. “I already told him.”

“And?”

“And…he told Knight to expense it.”

“See?” she grinned. “It’s fine. Now, I have to go. Do I need to call someone for you?”

“Why would you need to do that?” I asked, glaring at her.

“Well, you seem a bit worked up, and since you’re getting older, we have to worry about things like heart attacks.”

“I don’t need a fucking babysitter,” I snapped, falling right into her trap.

She tossed her head back and laughed. “Maybe not, but you need something. Listen, go home. Talk to Lucy. I’m sure if the situations were reversed, Knight would be doing everything possible to help you take care of Lucy. Remember how he sat outside her apartment with you while you spied on her?”

“That was different. I wasn’t about to kill anyone. Besides, there’s no need to consider the situations being reversed. Lucy stays home.”

“For now,” she grinned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means that she’ll eventually want to leave the house, and you can’t stop her.”

She turned and walked out of the room, flicking off the last light on her way. I stood in the dark trying to figure out what she meant. Lucy wouldn’t go back to work. Hell, she was happy at home, working on the sex toy shop with the others. Not that it mattered. If she were to leave, I would behave much more appropriately than Knight. Our women weren’t cattle that needed to be herded.

Even though I knew I couldn’t stop Knight from taking these drastic measures, it still sat in the pit of my stomach like a ball of lead. I was so worked up by the time I got home that I slammed the front door, making everyone inside stop and stare at me.

“Is everything okay?” Lucy asked, shooing the kids away.
