“Yeah, but it’s totally cool,” Sinner said, kneeling beside me. “Just sit back and relax. You’ve got your health?—”

I pointed at my face angrily. “You call this health?”

“Well…you’ve got friends,” he grinned. “Everyone needs friends. And you have Maggie, and that hoard of kids at home…”

“Wow, thanks for bucking me up,” I said sarcastically.

He slapped me on the shoulder. “Hey, that’s what friends are for. Besides, what are the chances the swelling won’t go down? I mean…” he laughed, covering his mouth.

I stared at him expectantly, waiting for the funny part of this. “What?”

“Well, it’s just…you never get hurt, so this was bound to come around. I just wasn’t expecting your face to blow up.”

I tried to rub my face in frustration, but I was really numb and couldn’t really feel anything. “What do we know?”

“Not a whole hell of a lot,” Knight grumbled. “Half the guys are missing, and we’re just floating down the river, hoping we don’t get blown up.”

“That’s all you have?”

“What more do you want?”

“A fucking status update. Some clue as to why I’m down in the jungle. Anything that might tell me what the fuck is going on!”

“Basically, Chance’s team came to the Amazon. They got lost and we had to come find them?—”

“They got lost?” I asked incredulously.

Knight glanced over at Sinner. “Well, technically, they disappeared. I mean, if you want to split hairs.”

“And then what happened?”

“Well, we came down here. You got bitten by a snake, and now we’re trying to catch up with everyone else.”

“Who’s everyone else?”

“Well, Rob is at the airport, Irish is…well, he’s somewhere,” Sinner explained. “Chance’s team is missing, as you know?—”

“What about the rest of your teams? Where’s Cazzo? And Alec and Florrie?”

“They uh…they sort of disappeared too,” Sinner nodded. “It’s a really long story.”

“I’m all ears.” I stared at them expectantly, but all of them just stared at me. “So, that’s it? No big reveal?”

“Give us a break, Cap,” Sinner said, sitting down on the edge of the boat. “We’ve been through a lot.”

I jabbed a finger in the general direction of my face. “So have I!”

“Yeah, but you didn’t go through what I went through. We really had a Danny and Kenickie moment back there.”

I frowned, not understanding. “What are you talking about?”

“Shit, you don’t remember that either? Damn, that was good, too.”

“Sinner,” I said in exasperation. I was already feeling like shit. The last thing I needed was to battle with him right now.

“What Sinner is failing to say,” Lola smirked, “is that he went into the jungle to find you weed to slap on your face.”

I frowned. “You mean, marijuana?”
