Page 75 of Playing With Fire

“So, you’re going to have this baby here?”

“I’m not having this baby,” I screamed. “Do you know why?”

She pretended to think about it. “Because you want to die a very slow, painful death where you refuse to give birth to the baby and your organs shut down?”

I glared at her, not enjoying her humor. “I’m not having this baby without Sebastian here.”

“Well, you can’t hold it in. He’s not going to be very happy with you if you’re dead.”

I paced for a few more minutes before another contraction hit. I bent over and screamed under my breath. Kate, on the other hand, sat down and opened a magazine.

“What are you doing?”

“Reading. Why?”

“I’m in labor!” I shouted.

“Uh-huh.” She licked her fingertips and flipped another page.

“Kate!”

She pointed to the fridge. “You should drink some water.”

“Are you going to help?”

“Sorry, I don’t do home births. Either we go to the hospital, or you’re going to have to find someone else who wants to help you out.”

I growled under my breath and grabbed my phone. If she wasn’t going to help me out, I’d find someone that would. I dialed Knight’s number, sure he would side with me.

“You rang?”

“Knight, I am in labor!”

“Yeah, we’re too far away. We won’t be back in time.”

“Tell your wife to help me!”

“She’s not helping?”

“She’s reading a magazine and refusing to do anything for me!”

“Let me talk to her.”

With a satisfied smirk, I walked over to her and shoved the phone in her face. As she read her magazine, she made affirmative noises here and there. “Sure.” She held out the phone for me. “He wants to talk to you.”

I grabbed it and held it to my ear. “Yes?”

“Go to the fucking hospital.”

I spun and glared at Kate. That traitor. “What?”

“She said you were refusing.”

“She didn’t say a word! I was standing right here!”

“I asked her questions and she answered. Satisfied?”

I narrowed my eyes at Kate, but she didn’t even look at me. “You put Sebastian on the phone right now!”
