He nodded. “Right, but that’s a problem for another time. Let’s just get through this. We can do a regular call and just tell her we can’t do a video call. What’s she going to do?”

“Again, castrate me when I get home.”

“Okay, but that’s a you problem. We need a solution for the here and now. That means getting you to a phone and making sure she doesn’t see what you look like until absolutely necessary.”

“Actually, I think if she saw him, she wouldn’t be so pissed at him,” Sinner added.

“Yes!” I pointed to him. “The sympathy vote. I need that right now.”

“Alright, so are we going to do this?” Knight asked.

“I thought we had to find someplace safe?” Sinner asked.

“What the fuck does it matter? If we’re lucky, someone will shoot at us and we’ll get disconnected.”

“Another bonus,” I grinned. “God, I really don’t want to sit through another labor.”

“Yeah, because it’s so fucking hard for you,” Rocco retorted, “as Maggie goes through hours of labor.”

“Clearly, you don’t remember things correctly if you think she’s in labor for hours.”

Sinner clapped me on the shoulder, sitting down beside me. “Don’t worry, Cap. I’m here for you, just like always. I’m still your second.”

I glared at him, wondering what the reference was about. “What are you talking about?”

He rolled his eyes. “Cap, you asked me to be your second when Maggie went into labor. I asked if we were going to Thunder Road. It became this whole thing. I’m sad you don’t remember. But that doesn’t matter. All you need to know is that I’m here for you. Over the phone. If you get her pregnant again, I’m moving out of the state.”

“Thanks,” I said sarcastically.

“Try not to fuck this up for us,” Knight said, handing over the phone.

“Yeah, and could you make it quick?” Wolf asked. “I really have to use the bathroom.”

I snatched the phone from Knight’s grasp and glared at Wolf, as much as one could when they could hardly see. “Go piss off the boat.”

He cleared his throat, scratching at the back of his neck. “It’s sort of a…different situation. One that requires…more care.”

I rolled my eyes. “Sure, I’ll tell Maggie that you need her to push the baby out so you can take a shit.”

“Thanks, Cap. I really appreciate it,” he said, clearly not understanding my sarcasm.

I blew out a huge breath, hoping she would take one look at me and feel only sympathy for me. The last thing I needed was for Maggie to be pissed at me when I was already feeling like shit. I would say I wanted this mission to be over, but I wasn’t sure that would be too much better, even if my face was twice its usual size.

“Can someone dial for me?”

Lola leaned over and hit the call button. I didn’t have to wait long to see how Maggie would react to my current predicament.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” she screeched. I could hear her pacing the room, and could imagine it in my mind. “That’s why you couldn’t call me?”

“Uh…” I didn’t know how to answer that one. “I’ve been a little out of it, Freckles.”

She barked out a laugh. “Yeah, I’ve been a little out of it too! I have a human inside me that’s ready to split me open. And while you promised me you’d be home for the delivery, you lied!”

“I didn’t lie. I?—”

“You ran away,” she snapped. “Don’t lie to me again.” She bent over and screamed under her breath. I actually felt slightly bad I wasn’t there. “I hate you so fucking much right now.”

Okay, I didn’t feel that bad. “Freckles, I would have been there, but we had a job to do.”
