“Yes, she is. She’s young.” His eyes narrowed so minutely that I almost missed it. “Very, very young. But Blair knew that she wanted to work with kids since she was a teenager, like Jenna, so I’m not surprised that my daughter is on the same path.”

“Like mother, like daughter,” I murmured, one corner of my mouth raising in amusement. Wasn’t Blair just a little older than her when you two were married? I almost gave voice to the thought, which would have been monumentally stupid.

“Well, thank you again. Let me know if there is anything I can do to repay the favor.”

I would absolutely remind him he said that in about five weeks.

Justice shook my hand, studying me a little more closely than before, but he didn’t comment other than to say goodbye.

My pager started buzzing just as my name came over the loudspeaker, and I glanced at the device. I was being called into an emergency c-section, so I focused on my job and hurried to where I was needed.

Unfortunately, after several situations kept me busy all evening, I was on call in the ER that night. I didn’t have time to stop and take Jenna home before my shift, which put me in a shitty fucking mood.

On my way to change into my scrubs, I sent a text to Linus to make sure he still came for Jenna. I also alerted her security to the situation. Then I sent Jenna a message, letting her know that Linus would be waiting for her when she was done and would walk with her to get her coat from my office before taking her home.

It wasn’t until four in the morning, when I was in the back of my car on the way home, that I realized she’d replied.

Sunshine:

Go kick butt and save lives. See you tomorrow :)

I laughed and thought about how to respond. But anything I wanted to say wouldn’t go over well if someone saw her texts. So I sent a simple message back.

Me:

See you tomorrow.

CHASE

Iglanced at my watch and realized that Jenna was a minute late. While that wouldn’t seem like much to most people, in the five weeks she’d been volunteering at the hospital, she’d never been late. I stood and stalked to the partially open door to my office, then froze when I heard her voice.

“Dani, we both know you aren’t going to let Comden get anywhere with you, so why are you trying to talk me into going to the doctor with you?”

It sounded like she was talking with her sister Dani. If I thought for a second that it was some guy named Danny, I would have lost my shit.

“Why don’t you have Mom go with you?” She paused, then muttered, “I don’t need birth control.”

Damn straight.

“Look, I’m at the hospital. We can talk about this when I get home.” Jenna huffed and snapped, “Stop calling him Dr. Dreamy!”

My lips curled into a cocky smile when I heard the distinct note of jealousy in Jenna’s tone.

“I know he’s sexy, but you shouldn’t be thinking about him like that.”

She listened for a second, then scoffed disbelievingly. “I guarantee he isn’t interested in me.”

How wrong you are, sunshine.

“Birth control isn’t necessary if you aren’t having sex.”

Or when you're making babies.

“Good grief. You are a master at guilt trips, baby sister. Yes, you are. I’m five minutes older.”

I smiled, thinking about how damn cute she was.
