Chapter 1

Kingpin

Strolling through the lobby of Silver Springs nursing home, I spied Villain sucking face with that nurse, Rachel. Fire engine red hair, girl had more tattoos than any of my brothers. She had a big canvas, too, curves for days. I knew because I’d fucked her before, so long ago, as if in another life.

Rachel became another hangaround at Royal Road after she got a taste of me. I was like a gateway drug, so irresistible she’d come lookin’ for more. Lately, she spent her time at the club in Villain’s lap. And at the moment, the girl practically climbed the big guy, humping him like a horny dog right at her job. With the nurse distracted, I sidled down the hall to Satan’s room. Memphis was waiting for me.

“I can’t believe this will be the last time we break grandad outta here,” she said, wiping a tear. She’d dressed all in black for both occasions.

I don’t think Memphis had ever come to physically break him out before. Never wanted to break a nail. But I took her meaning all the same.

“Yeah, it’s a real shame. But we’ll do right by him tonight. One last party,” I said, providing some comfort as we struggled to get the old man’s limp body into a wheelchair.

“Thanks for doing this, Kingpin,” Memphis whispered once his body was secure.

I nodded, knowing I’d be doing this with or without her. However, I was mighty pleased she was still at Royal Road even though we weren’t together any longer. Especially after that horrible business with her cousin, Junebug. Memphis had been kind to Eve, my ol’ lady, too. Accepting her, and the fact that I’d moved on. I appreciated that. Never thought she’d be able to get over me, but boy, had I been wrong. Hell, Memphis even watched Prince and Angel on occasions, when she wasn’t busy with her own man.

“Thanks for meeting with Monster,” I said in return before we left the room. “You know, he thinks I plan to kill you. The things I told him I would do.” I shook my head.

Memphis laughed out loud before she slapped her hand across her mouth.

Unfortunately, we’d had a spy and a mess. I’d salvaged a brother that should’ve been toast. That was after me and his brothers stripped him of his colors. After we ripped the flesh from his back. But fuck, I couldn’t go easy on him. Nevertheless, I could give him another chance to redeem himself. Leviathan had always been loyal to me before a woman led him astray. Men will do crazy things for pussy, but love… That was damn near worse. The fact Levi had fallen in love was something I could sympathize with.

Memphis helped me test his loyalty when I relocated him into the Road Monsters MC, a club no one knew anything about. At least no one knew my own connections to it. That was another reason Memphis was still around. Whore knew all about my side venture with a few other MC presidents. Four of us controlled a group of ruthless nomads together, all men who had little to lose and nowhere to go. Why? Because it was fucking smart being anonymous. I could clean up messes without getting my hands dirty, without answering to anyone except my fellow Aces.

Thankfully, Memphis had been a team player, or she’d be buried in the pig shit in Franklin like her cousin. She convinced Levi, renamed Monster, that she had the info and plans to bring me down, all our doing, to test his loyalty. Biker passed the test with flying colors and instead of joining her, he ratted her out to me. Seeing a brother make smart decisions hit me right in the chest.

I blinked my wet eyes. As we pushed Satan down the hallway and out of the nursing home, of course, I was emotional. The man had been like a father to me, better than my own flesh and blood. I’d miss him like hell. Our old VP deserved a proper sendoff. Dimple waited in his cage, a Pink Cadillac as always. Satan could no longer ride his hog but deserved to travel in style.

Villain appeared just in time to help us get the old man into the back of the car. Rachel was with him, taking the wheelchair back inside. I realized she had only been putting on a good show for the cameras. My brother, with his dashing good looks, kissed her hand before she left.

He gave Satan his sunglasses, adjusting them onto his face. “Rachel’s coming to the funeral later,” he said. “If that’s alright?” Villain was in deeper with this girl than I’d thought.

“She your girl now? Officially?” I asked. Satan’s funeral was club business, a private affair.

Villain nodded, surprising the hell out of me. I didn’t think he’d ever settle for one woman, not to mention he’d always been hung up on our late brother, Buzzard’s daughter, Tessa.

Memphis took the seat beside her Grandad and Villain got in the other side. I hopped into the front seat of the convertible, literally, as was tradition. Dimple, dressed like the King, burned rubber, peeling out of there like a bat outta hell.

When we rolled into Royal Road, Eve was waiting for me. Seeing my ol’ lady and the kids always made everything better. For tonight, Haven, Levi’s daughter, who was still with us, was keeping Prince and Angel, because this funeral might get too wild for a toddler and a baby. As Villain and Dimple situated Satan into his old leather cut, bearing his name, and sat him in Pharaoh’s old throne, my throne, I took Eve into a tight embrace.

Running her hands under my vest, she kissed my cheek. “How are you holding up, Beau?”

Relishing her warmth, I inhaled her hair. My Love always smelled like strawberries and sunshine. The light of my life dressed in all black tonight. She’d aimed for respectable. But there wasn’t a top that could hide her big titties. Her skirt was short enough, but her boots were so tall, they hid her milky thighs.

“Love, I’ll make it through with you here by my side.”

Amongst the neon lights and smoky air were nearly every member of the Royal Bastards MC, Nashville Chapter. A rare sight, as my club had grown like a wildfire, like I’d always hoped it would. Just like the first night Eve met our old VP, she would take the stage tonight.

Pulling back, I met her eyes. “Did you see the paper this morning?”

“About Viv? Dying in prison?” She rolled her pretty brown eyes. “Yeah, Celie reached out to me a couple of days ago. She wants me to come to Bootsie’s to talk. I reckon I’m gonna. But I guess that’s what all the fuss is about. I’m thinking of inviting her to the wedding.”

Once my mind realized Celie was Wolf’s ex-wife, I was about to say, what’s one more person? But our conversation was rushed and hushed, for another time. There was never enough time, it seemed. I couldn’t even think about all that mess from almost three years ago when I shot that bitch Viv in the leg while rescuing Eve from the vengeance of Noah Fond, the high roller hell bent on taking me down. Rescuing her and Hallow. I sure as hell didn’t want that fucker in my mind. Good thing, we were interrupted by Memphis, up on stage, eulogizing her grandad.

Royal Road fell silent as we listened to Memphis give a heartfelt toast to Satan, but I could hardly listen. And I didn’t have a drink ready. I steered Eve to the bar. After all, this was supposed to be a party, a celebration of his life. I wouldn’t allow myself, the fucking President to tear up.

Opry tipped his cowboy hat. Biker always preferred to be behind the bar. In charge of the hiring, he had a couple of new half-naked sweetbutts with him. His woman was a lot more trusting than mine.
