“Gabriel?” I murmur.

She nods. “Yeah. He gave me the creeps.”

“You’re telling me,” I huff. “He’s the reason we’re in this mess. He…” I squeeze my eyes closed, trying to breathe through what feels like a concussion pounding in my skull. “God, I think they hit me.”

“Yeah, there’s blood in your hair,” Sunny comments with a sigh.

“He sold us to Shadow, Sunny,” I say, swallowing hard. “And it’s all my fault.”

“It’s not your fault, Journey. You protected me when I was weak. You saved me from something that could have been worse. You’re my hero.”

“I’m no one’s hero,” I scoff.

“You’ll always be mine,” she whispers. “What do you think is going to happen to us?” she asks.

“I have no clue,” I murmur, shaking my head. “But I know it can’t be good.”

I stiffen, hushing my sister when a door opens and light floods into our dimly lit room.

“Wonderful,” says a deep, throaty voice with heavy footsteps coming toward us. Shadows hang all around his frame, not giving me a clear view of his facial features. The only thing my weary eyes can make out is his massive height. Even his voice doesn’t sound familiar. “Set him there,” he grunts, pointing to a spot on the floor.

My breath stalls in my lungs when Shepp’s lifeless body, covered in blood, is tossed on the floor beside me without a care. He rolls to his side, not flinching when his head basically bounces off the floor. The men who carried him in, look between Sunny and me and then, walk out the door, closing it behind them.

“Shepp,” I choke out in a whisper, attempting to move my limbs again.

“Don’t bother with him. He’ll come to,” the gruff voice says from the shadows finally stepping forward.

I swear my heart fucking shatters and falls into my ass when he leans down, coming face to face with me. He grins. I fucking want to vomit.

“No,” I whisper, shaking my head. “I… You’re Shadow?” I yelp in a panic, shaking my head more. “No! I…”

“Killed me?” he questions, running a finger down a sharp scar etched into the side of his face. “Not exactly, Journey West,” he says with a lazy grin.
