Simon couldn’t help himself. “Better than anyone else does.”

“Right. So...” Wright let his voice trail away and waited. The silence went on too long, until it was obvious that Simon didn’t have an answer. Wright nodded, as if he was taking a mental note, then continued. “What happened, after she told you?”

“We argued. I mean, I was upset. She was a little drunk. She’d had maybe three glasses of wine, which wasn’t like her, but I guess maybe she needed the courage. The conversation wasn’t going anywhere. So I left.”

“You left,” Wright said.

“Yeah.”

“It was your parents’ house, but you were the one to leave?”

“I had my car, and she didn’t. And she’d been drinking. I didn’t want to be there anymore, so I went home. Nina said she was going to call a friend and get a ride in the morning.”

“What time did you leave?”

“I’m not sure, exactly. I think around eleven P.M.?”

“And that was the last time you saw her?”

Simon nodded. “Yes. That’s right.” He looked Wright in the eye. The expression on his face was open and frank. He wasn’t hiding anything anymore.

“And you haven’t heard from her since? No phone calls? No text messages? No likes or comments on social media?”

Simon shook his head. His eyes lost focus, like he’d gone somewhere else.

“Do you have any idea where Nina might be, Simon?” Wright’s voice was gentle, almost hypnotic. Simon blinked and stared back at him.

“No. I don’t know.”

“Do you have security cameras at your house in Stowe?”

“I think so?” Simon looked uncertain, suddenly. He looked at me.

“I’m not sure,” I said. “We can check. I’ll get back to you.”

Rory’s voice came from behind me.

“What’s all this?”

All four of us jumped. I turned. Rory was standing in the kitchen, smiling slightly. It was a Monday, but he was wearing his weekend uniform of slacks and a Jordan Precision Tools polo shirt, under a sweater. I’d never been more relieved to see him in my life.

I stood up. “This is Detective Matthew Wright. And Officer Reid. They came by to talk to Simon. About Nina.”

Rory stepped forward and offered his hand. “Good to meet you.”

Wright shook Rory’s hand. “It’s good to meet you, Mr. Jordan.”

“So, Nina’s still missing? She hasn’t shown up?” Rory said. He put his hands in his pockets and leaned back on his heels, a look of concern on his face.

“Afraid that’s the case,” Wright said.

Rory grimaced. “I’m very sorry to hear that.”

“I was just asking Simon here if he knew where Nina might have gone.”

“I don’t,” Simon put in quickly. “I don’t know where she went.”

“Right. I was about to ask Simon to put me in touch with Nina’s friends. Presumably, Simon, you know who they are.”
