“TJ, how are you?” Gabby asked, her eyes concerned, and I remembered she thought I had relapsed.

“I’m fine. Really.”

“Come with me. I want to talk about the Holmesburg case.” Gabby walked me down the hall to her office. “I was worried, since you’re in late.”

“I was with John and Dad at Runstan.”

“Oh boy.” Gabby rolled her eyes.

“You don’t know the half of it.”

“Nor do I want to.” Gabby chuckled.

We entered her office, which was as sunny and eclectic as her house, decorated with woven kilims, wooden sculptures, and photos of her and Martin taken around the world. They reminded me of Neil, who had wanderlust, too, and I wondered why I didn’t. Maybe I had to get it right at home first.

“I have a list for you.” Gabby crossed to a cluttered desk, tore a page off a legal pad, and handed it to me. “These are the plaintiffs I want you to check in with.”

“Okay, thanks.” I scanned the sheet, which had four names and addresses.

“Start with Joe Ferguson. Chuck has been in touch with him, and Joe agreed to see you. I emailed him a Complaint and tell him I’m going to file ASAP. Get any new medical bills or any new health news. If he has questions, I’m happy to call or meet with him. Make sure he knows the lawsuit won’t cost him a dime. He’s going to think there’s a catch, but just tell him.”

“We’re fighting for justice.”

“Exactly.” Gabby smiled. “Can you get started right away?”

“I gotta check in with John, then I’m on it.”

“Okay. Let me know if you needanything.” Gabby looked at me with concern, and I hated deceiving her.

“You’re a great sister, you know that?”

“Yes,” Gabby answered, and we both laughed.

I handed the thumb drive to John. “Take a look at this. I copied Lemaire’s spreadsheets and documents from his computer at Runstan.”

“Really? How?” John’s eyes lit up, and I filled him in about Lillian while he inserted the thumb drive into his laptop. His office was quiet, and the TVs on the shelves played Italian soccer on mute. John loved sports regardless of country, like Doctors Without Borders, only a selfish lawyer.

“Lemaire must have kept a record of where he got the money from or which banks he deposited it to.”

“Right, let’s see.” John started hitting keys, and the screen filled with spreadsheets. “This could be a treasure trove, but it will take time to go through.”

“Don’t copy the files. We don’t want them on your laptop.”

“I know,” John said irritably. His attention returned to the screen. “I don’t see the accounts that looked suspicious to me. I bet the real books are hidden or encrypted. We need our IT guy. What’s his name again?”

“Andre.”

“Can you call him?” John kept reading, his eyes racing back and forth. “Get him over here ASAP?”

“Okay, but—”

“TJ, what were you doing at Runstan anyway?” John took out the thumb drive and handed it to me. I updated him about the Hyundai, and he recoiled. “I’m being followed? Why didn’t you call and tell me?”

“Again, we need to keep the record clear. I had your back, literally. I was there the whole time. I’m running the Hyundai’s license plate now.”

“Why are they following us? What do they want?” John glancedworriedly at the laptop. “We can’t go to the cops now, Stan doesn’t want to. I told him everything this morning, about the missing money and Lemaire pulling a gun on me.”
