“Tell me what happened.”

“I-I was in a bad place.” She fought back her tears, her gaze locked on something outside. “I had just found out about my ex that they had slept together the night before. I was a mess, and this guy was there flirting with me. He was hot, and with a lot of wine… He was perfect to take my hurt out on.” She wiped quickly at her eyes, gaining control of herself. “It was supposed to be revenge sex. A night I could pretend I wasn’t hurting.” She gulped. “But I lost control. And he died.”

“Lost control?” My brows rose. “He died while having sex with you?”

She nodded.

“Like in the act?”

Her head bobbed again.

Damn…

Agony flooded her features, making me wish I had kept my mouth shut. But holy shit. The refined princess here was more feral than I gave her credit for.

Gazing at her, I couldn’t help but look at her differently, the innocent view I had of her before rubbing off. But what did it say about me that I found her more fascinating?

“O-kay.” I kept my voice soothing. “We’ll get back to that, but can I ask what it has to do with the situation we are in?”

Her head twisted to me, her green eyes bright with unshed tears, her expression severe.

“He was the son of someoneveryimportant, who secretly controls the Russian Mafia.”

Oh. Fuck.

“Az istenfáját!” I ran my hand through my hair. “That’s why you’re running? They’re after you because you killed one of their own?”

“His family isn’t really Mafia, but—”

“It doesn’t matter. Even if they are hired… they won’t stop coming after you.” I ran my hand down my head, rubbing my neck. We were fucked. “And your friend? She works with them?”

“I guess so.” Raven lifted her shoulder, her head bowing, and I could feel the hurt and betrayal. “I didn’t know. Eve was someone I trusted, my family trusted. Someone I thought cared about me. Cared about Reid. Now he’s dead.” She swallowed back a sob. “I can’t go home. I can’t put my family in that situation.”

“They’ll go after them anyway.” I shook my head. “Especially if they can get to you by going after them.”

“It’s more complicated than that.” She twisted her ring around her finger, staring down at the red stone. “I’ve already been such a burden to them. I’ve caused so many problems. More than you know.”

“That’s what family is for. I’m sure they’d rather have you home. Safe.”

“I’m sure your family would say the same about you.”

Touché.

“It’s better I’m not there. For now,” she said adamantly. “As I said, it’s really complicated.”

“Looks like we have time for complicated.” I plunked down on the bed. We needed to lie low for a bit, find a way to get money, and come up with a plan.

She fully turned to me, her arms wrapped around her stomach. “You first. Tell me about Kek and Lucas.”

My spine went rigid, my defense walling up at hearing their names come out of her mouth. They didn’t belong there; they were mine to speak of, to think about, to possess. Her uttering their names dropped guilt into my gut, making them feel more distant, like I was losing them. Letting my vow to them drift away.

The sudden need to escape the sharp pain, the craving for fairy dust, urged me to my feet, heading for the door.

“Where are you going?” She jerked from the window, traveling to me.

“I’m gonna get us some food,” I muttered. And alcohol.

Slamming the door, I stomped out of the apartment building, my head rolling with everything I had discovered and the severity of our situation. Going after Sonya and Iain was going to be dangerous enough, but now we had the Russian Mafia after us.
