Shock steals my thoughts as he ties my hair into a loose ponytail. I don’t know where he got the elastic, but the idea of a massive, battle-hardened alpha carrying them around in his pocket does something weird to my stomach.

When he settles his leather jacket over my shoulders, heat blooms in my abdomen and spreads throughout my limbs. His spicy alpha pheromones fill my nostrils and override my common sense. The urge to burrow deeper into the fabric tilts my head down, but I flush in embarrassment and jerk my chin up.

The back of my skull smacks against his chest. His low rumble melts my bones.

He reaches around me and zips his jacket closed, encasing me in soft, aromatic fabric.

My heart slows and stretches toward him.

I bite my tongue and use the pain to yank my thoughts out of the unexpected trance.

His rough fingers close around my nape and push me forward. Without a word, he guides me across the deck toward his speeder.

My head spins and knees shake as he deepens his rumble.

He isn’t fighting fair. Alphas curse, snarl, and growl all the time, but I’ve never heard one purr before. He’s using my omega instincts against me.

I stiffen my spine and balk when we reach the railing.

“Boss, what do we do with these old biddies?”

He shifts just enough for me to glimpse Nannie struggling to stay on her feet between several males.

“Put them on Tarot’s speeder. Drag the fishing boat behind us. We’ll part it out at the liner,” my captor says before scooping me into his arms and stepping onto his speeder.

I don’t want my grandpa’s creations—water purifiers, electrical cookers, nets, and random mechanical inventions—to be torn apart or used by my captor’s men. Tears fill my eyes and a lump forms at the base of my throat as the massive alpha hauls me off the vessel I’ve called home for over a decade.

I strain to look around the alpha’s muscular arm and meet Hera’s wide eyes. The fear shining from her gaze and streaming down her face wound my soul. She reaches out and steps toward me, but the beta male beside her tosses her over his shoulder.

The world spins as my captor lowers me onto a bench. I search for my sister and find the beta male hopping onto the speeder on the far side of the fishing boat. Nannie and Auntie Bell’s white hair gleam in the sunlight at the edge of my vision as they’re led onto a separate ship.

The pressure behind my eyes grows, but I grit my teeth and blink it away.

Sorrow settles like a rock lodged behind my sternum.

Raiders killed Uncle Jim and Kale. I don’t know whether my grandpa and uncle are still alive, but my hope falters. The raiders may have found us by chance, but I doubt this alpha and his crew wander through the deep sea without a purpose. Which means my grandpa and uncles are most likely dead.

As the speeder drags my family’s fishing boat behind it, another surge of sadness grips me.

It took less than ten minutes for this alpha to ruin my entire world. He took away my home, shattered my hope, and stole me from my family. I may never see my sister again.

I flex my arms and test my bindings. The leather of his belt digs into my skin, but I pull harder.

Thick fingers grip my chin and tilt my face up to stormy eyes. The golden flecks in his dark brown irises startle me into silence.

“Don’t hurt yourself. That’s my job,” he snarls, but the soft stroke of his thumb along my lower lip says otherwise. The gentle, almost reverent touch stuns me into silence. “Stop testing my belt. It won’t give.”

His murmured words sink deep into my psyche. They feel more like a promise than a threat. My lips move without my permission.

“Neither will you, will you? You won’t give. At all.”

I swallow as my voice echoes in my ears. I’ve never sounded so husky before.

He shifts his hands until he cups my jawline and grips my hair, effectively caging my head in his grasp.

“You got it all wrong, little one. I’m going to give youeverything.”

Embers smolder in his intense brown eyes. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth and my throat scratches as I swallow. His rumble infects my organs, clenching my stomach and streaking heat through my veins.
