My heart pounds wildly in my chest as I pace the floor. “I don’t think I can do this.”

“Yes, you can.” Julianna chuckles into the phone. “Trust me, he’s going to be thrilled to see you.”

If only her words were more reassuring. Brenden and I haven’t spoken since things ended so disastrously last Saturday.

I was confused and upset. Perhaps even a little scared. The things Brenden said hit a nerve. Mostly because he wasn’t completely wrong.

“How can you be so sure? I was pretty awful to him.”

Julianna sighs. “You’ll have to trust me on this one.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose, my stomach churning. I’m terrified, but the heaviness in my heart from missing him far outweighs my fears.

“Do you know what you’re going to say?” Her question nearly makes my heart stop.

“I’m going to pass out,” I pant, trying to slow my breathing as Julianna nearly dies laughing.

“I can’t believe you decided to show up at his place of employment as some grand gesture and didn’t even plan what to say,” she teases, her words staggered through her laughter.

“How about: I’m sorry I’m a crazy bitch. Does that work?”

“I’m sure that’ll do the trick,” she says.

“He’s going to tell me to get lost. I’ve been nothing but a pain in the ass.”

The smack of her lips echoes through the receiver. “I highly doubt that. What time does his class end?”

“Ummm…” When I pull the phone away from my ear to check the time, the studio door opens. “Fuck, I’m going to puke. They’re coming out now.”

“Well, go get him, girl. But don’t puke. That’d be bad.”

“Yeah, thanks for the advice,” I mumble, running my shaky hand through my hair.

“Good luck.” Her giggle is the last thing I hear before she hangs up.

There’s a heavy thudding against my ribcage, my breath stilled as I watch for his tall frame and dark hair. He walks out once everyone else has filed out, and my eyes water from the flood of emotions.

His eyes lock on me as he looks up, his footsteps coming to a halt. He regards me with a tilted head, blinking as though he isn’t sure I’m even real before making his way over to me.

“Lizzy? What are you doing here?” he asks, rubbing the back of his neck.

I shift on my feet, my erratic breathing making it hard to speak. “I came to apologize.”

Brenden

Lizzy looks like a damn dream. For a moment, I thought she was nothing more than my imagination. She’s the last person I expected to see.

“What?” I inch closer.

Her eyes are wet, her breath ragged. “I’m so sorry for freaking out on you last weekend.”

“You’re sorry?” My eyebrows furrow, still not positive I’m hearing her correctly.

She’s not the one who needs to apologize. I keep acting like a jackass, pushing her too far.
