I smirk at her demanding tone and flushed cheeks, her eyes narrowing as she adjusts her shirt and smooths her hair, clearly flustered. “Uh…we fell asleep,” I scoff, sitting up.

“Yeah, I got that part. How could you let me fall asleep like that?”

I grab her hand as she shoves my shoulder, pulling her closer. “You hadn’t exactly done anything to keep me awake either.”

Her eyes dance over me, but she doesn’t say a word before scooting off the bed and out of my grasp.

“Where are you going?” I watch with amusement as she turns in circles, looking around the room for her things.

She stills, taking a deep breath as she runs her hand through her hair. “I need to go.”

“What’s the rush?” I get out of bed to fetch her shoes.

“I just, I have to—”

Her stuttered words stall as I move closer, the color on her skin deepening. Her eyes flicker to my sweatpants where my erection is on full display. She bites down on her bottom lip, the heat in her glare setting me on fire.

I close the space between us, and she inhales a sharp breath, as if my closeness is almost painful for her. “Here,” I say, holding up her shoes.

Her breathing grows heavier as she reaches out to take them. She jolts forward when I jerk back, bringing her body dangerously close to mine. My pulse skyrockets, my head spinning from the craving to touch her, taste her. It takes all my self-control to keep from giving in, but she needs to be the one to make a move.

“Don’t do that.” I sweep her hair over her shoulder, slouching until she’s forced to meet my gaze.

“Do what?” she breathes.

“Overthink this. I can practically hear those wheels turning in your brain.” I let go of her shoes, telling her what she needs to hear. “We fell asleep while we were watching a movie. It doesn’t have to mean anything more.”

That’s not how I truly feel. Last night meant so much more to me. For us. It was a step forward.

She nods, dropping her shoes to the floor before slipping them on. “All right, but I should really get going. I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

After a curt nod of my head, she turns to leave, and my chest begins to tighten. I’m terrified the second she walks out the door this will all end up being nothing more than a frail memory of a dream.

“Hey.” I catch her arm to stop her. “Come here.”

She spins to face me and I wrap her in a tight hug. “Jesus, Brenden,” she squeals, giggling. “I need to be able to breathe, you know.”

She snuggles into me, returning my embrace, and the air moves more freely through my lungs as I loosen my hold.

She may not be ready to fully admit her true feelings yet, but she isn’t running away from them anymore either.
