Sensing how close I am to losing it, he pulls me in front of him. He holds me to his chest as he places the call to the station, and then we wait for chaos to descend once more.

Chapter Sixteen

Now

She’s scared. I get it, but I don’t like seeing him touch her. I want to yank her out of his arms and fuck her right there in front of him so that she knows who she belongs to.

I grit my teeth and fist my hands, counting to one hundred, then backward down to zero until I have my temper under control.

I crack my neck and shake out some of the tension. Alright, I’m fine. I don’t need to kill him just yet. But that doesn’t mean I won’t. He better watch his fucking back, or I’ll make it so he disappears permanently.

I step aside when the cops pull up, keeping my ball cap and borrowed glasses on. I’m not worried about them finding me. They’re more concerned with what’s going on inside the movie theater than outside it.

My eyes move to that dickhead’s hand as he rubs it up and down her arm. I feel my eye twitch as rage floods my veins, a sign I should get out of here before I lose my shit. I’ve come toofar to fuck everything up now. I’m so close to the finish line that I can almost taste the success on the tip of my tongue. What a prize she will make.

Feeling my skin tingle, I look at her and see her looking straight at me.

For a single moment, it’s as if we’re connected by a tangible thread. But when she yanks on the dickhead’s arm, I know I’m out of time.

I disappear before she can point me out. Walking away with my hands in my pockets, I stare at the worn out toe of my sneaker and center myself.

Everything is playing out exactly as I planned. I just need to be patient for a little while longer. It goes against every instinct I have, but it has to be this way. This time, I refuse to let her go.

Chapter Seventeen

Valen

The merger went south at the last minute, so instead of being buried deep in my woman, I’ve been buried under a mountain of paperwork. A glance down at my shirt confirms I’m still in the same clothes I wore yesterday.

When the fuck did I last eat? As if my question makes my brain snap into focus, my stomach growls loudly. I pick up my phone and dial my secretary.

“Mr. Valen,” she scolds. “If I had known you were here, I would have brought you coffee. How on earth did I miss you this morning?”

“I didn’t come in this morning.” I sigh, tossing my glasses on the desk so I can rub my tired eyes. “I never went home,” I admit and hear her curse in a way she never does. Nothing much shocks me anymore, but hearing my secretary drop the f-bomb renders me mute.

“I’ll order you something to eat and have a set of clean clothes brought up for you so we can send what you have onto the dry cleaners. I don’t need you stinking up this floor,” she jokes, but I can hear the hint of worry in her voice.

“I’m okay, I promise. I just lost track of time. But I think I’m finally getting somewhere now.”

“Good. Now, what do you want to eat?”

“Anything, but if you get me a steak, I’ll let you have my firstborn.”

“If that child turns out to be as troublesome as you, I think I’m better off asking for a raise,” she says before hanging up, making me grin.

I strip off my T-shirt and jeans, my feet already bare from kicking off my running shoes earlier when I needed to pace. I fold up my clothes, placing them on the corner of my desk, and continue working until there is a tap on the door.

I walk over and open it, taking the hanger holding a freshly pressed suit from one of Fauna’s hands and a bag of food from the other. The smell has my stomach growling in anticipation.

“Dirty clothes?”

“Hmm?”

She looks at me with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh, shit. On my desk. I got distracted by the smell of the food.”

“Mm-hmm,” she murmurs, walking in and grabbing my laundry along with my empty coffee cup.
