Henry looked away.

“We’ll find the other ones, too. The victims that Bradford knew about. He made so many notes in his journal. All about you and your crimes. Like a twisted, fangirl diary. One that is going to bury you so deep in the ground.”

Henry still wasn’t meeting his gaze.

“Here’s the thing,” Oliver continued, and he didn’t let any of his tension show. “I don’t need to hear any of your lies. You’re not going to jerk me around and you are certainly not going to play more mind games with your son.” Oliver closed his file. He rose. “You’re done.” Then he walked for the door.

Now, if he’d played the scene properly there would be a response in five, four, three—

“Maybe I wanted him to save Alina.”

“Guard, open the door,” Oliver directed.

“Maybe I told Xander that Midas should be brought in as a bodyguard not because I wanted to pin things on him…but because I thought he could save her.”

The guard opened the door.

“Maybe I knew he wasn’t like me.” Henry’s voice rose a notch. Hard to do with such a deep voice. “Maybe I knew he could be…something else. If he just shook off the darkness I brought to him.”

Oliver didn’t turn around. “You expect me to believe that you care about Midas?”

“I told him everything he needed to know from the beginning. Told him not to trust the lawyer. When Midas came here the second time, I told him to go back. I knew Alina needed him.”

“You were setting him up.”

“I was trying to keep the woman alive.”

Oliver’s grip tightened on the file. “You wanted Midas to be a hero?”

“Better than being whatever the fuck I am.”

Oliver finally looked back.

Henry had partially turned in his chair. His eyes met Oliver’s. Henry raised his chin. “Jennifer Chestnut. Seattle. Buried off Juniper Avenue. Carly Shore. Wyoming. Left her on a little ranch outside of Gillette. Eza Jackson. Idaho. In Pocatello…”

The names kept coming.

Oliver went back to the table and began writing them down.

“You think he was bullshitting you?” Memphis Camden asked as he gazed at the list.

“I think I’m going to investigate and find out.” Oliver paused. “But I need help.” A lot of it.

“Right. Like the Feds aren’t going to be all over this…”

“They will be,” he allowed. “But I’d also like some people who specialize in cold cases.”

Memphis’s grin was tiger sharp. “I think I can help you out.”

Oliver extended his hand to the man he considered a friend. “I knew you could.”

The End
