Felicity, I tried to warn you.

The call ended, and I was more fucked up than before.

You better not fucking die on me, Kierra.

Chapter Forty-Two

Kierra

I heard movement in the room. The sound of soft whispers and pages of a magazine flicking, but I didn’t want to open my eyes yet because if I did, I’d be forced back into reality—a reality where Rory didn’t exist. He was there while they operated on me—teasing smirk, blue eyes, and a desire for adventure. He was on his bike, and every time I tried to hop on the back, he shook his head and shoved me away. I fell on my ass the last time he pushed me. I gave him the finger, and he laughed before revving his bike—the same one I destroyed. The apologies had tumbled out of my mouth so quickly that the words were jumbled.

“What are you sorry for?”

“For moving on so quickly and wrecking your bike.”

He shook his head and grinned.

“Kierra, it’s just a fucking bike. You and Kiyah always meant more to me than metal and pistons. And as for the boy scout…I kinda like him; he’s an upgrade. You gotta live your life, Kierra. You have a family that loves and needs you. I don’t want to see you again for a very long time. I love you and Kiyah. Go back to your family. They’re waiting for you.”

So, I lay there with my eyes shut for as long as I could, hoping to get another glimpse of him, when I felt fingers entangled in mine.

“Kierra, are you in pain? Should I call a nurse?”

It was Simone.

“I’m…I’m not in pain.”

“You’re crying.”

“Shouldn’t you be hooked up to an IV in your own room?” I croaked.

“I was discharged this morning and stuck around, hoping to see you wake up. You scared the shit out of us, Kierra.”

“D-did they find who did this to me?”

“The police tracked them down. It was a pair of teenagers who took Mommy and Daddy’s SUV out for a spin…without a license, I may add. Jonathan’s already in lawyer mode, trying to sue the parents’ insurance company—rightfully so, but I know he’s working for the distraction.”

That sounds like Jonathan.

“The kids?”

“They are on the mend. Anthony said they were eating oatmeal and fruit this morning for breakfast. They asked about you, and he explained that you had been in an accident but would be coming home soon. Kiyah was beside herself, but she’s apparently been receiving some extra love from her step-grandparents. Grant completely shut down, Casey’s putting on a brave face, and Daisy took her frustration out on Nori.”

I smiled weakly. “I doubt that. Daisy is just getting her lick back.”

“Probably,” Simone laughed. “I can’t even keep up anymore.”

“How are you and the baby?”

“We’re good. But…um…I have to tell you something.”

“What is it?”

“You’re pregnant.”

My eyelids flew open so fast that the gust of wind they created dried my eyes out. “What did you say?” I asked quietly, steeling my gaze on Simone.

“I told the doctor I was your sister when I was here, and he gave me the rundown on your condition. I asked about the level of care you’d need and if you had any follow-up appointments, and he told me that you should stay in bed for a few days and no heavy lifting. Then he told me that you needed to follow up with your primary care doctor and the OB/GYN in two weeks. He said he was amazed the baby survived the accident. I guess HIPAA violations aren’t a concern at this hospital. That’s another lawsuit.”
