He followed me into my room and we opened the message at the same time. Fitz even made me count down.

She replied.

She wanted to video chat with us.

Asap. Her words, not ours.

As soon as possible.

“Does that mean she accepts the match? What does it mean?” Fitz asked.

“You’re asking me? Let’s take a breath and chill for a moment. She wants to video chat with us. She’s not proposing a full-on mating right now. Let’s talk to her and see what she says.”

He blew out a long breath. “Let’s call her and set up a time.”

When we called her phone, we were greeted by someone named Tilly who she said was Haven’s best friend and assistant. Haven was in a meeting, but she’d asked her to schedule a video chat with us.

The woman must’ve been super busy. She couldn’t even answer her own phone.

From Tilly, we learned Haven’s only free time that day was late at night. Fitz and I would have to wait up, but it was the least we could do for the woman who had infiltrated our lives with just a picture and some details about her life.

So we waited. Ate dinner. Showered. Changed clothes.

Changed clothes again.

We didn’t watch TV that night. We paced.

As much as we were biding our time, when my phone trilled with the notification of an incoming video call, I nearly jumped out of my skin.

“Ready?” I asked my best friend.

“Ready.”

I tapped the green button and held my breath. “Haven,” Fitz said, and I was struck with the sheer beauty of her. She was more than beautiful. She was ethereal. Otherworldly. A beauty I didn’t know could occur on Earth or anywhere else.

Her picture did her a half justice.

“Collyn.” It felt like she was looking right at me. “And, Fitz. It’s nice to meet you. I’m sorry about the schedule. My life is nuts right now.”

“It’s okay,” I answered, since my friend was in a bit of a stupor. “We were happy to oblige. May I ask what you do that has you so busy?”

She blushed a bit and, if I thought she was beautiful before, it was nothing compared to her with a hint of rose skating across her cheeks. “I’m the CEO of my own business. I have a building full of employees and a personal assistant and yet, I’m busier than ever.”

We chatted for a while about what we did for work and some general things, but before long, Fitz spoke up, “Haven, I have to say, you are really beautiful. You are clearly independent and intelligent. Why hasn’t someone else scooped you up already?”

She ducked her head. “The truth is, I spent my life pursuing business, and at age twenty-one, I created this app. Graduated early. Bought a home. Started this huge business. Then, I began looking for a mate.”

Haven had both of us on our toes.

“Take your time,” I whispered. “Breathe through it.” They were Fitz’s words. He had spoken them to me several times when I had panic attacks.

She did so with a soft smile. “The first match I had with the app was with a man named Jerome. We met for dinner after a week of chatting and five minutes later, he threw his napkin in my face and told me he was wrong. His wolf had spoken. I could never be the luna of a pack. I could never be his luna. After that, I deleted the app until my, well, you spoke with Tilly. She took it upon herself to reactivate my account, and there you two were.”

We chatted for two hours, until it was morning at our home. The female looked more and more weary as the minutes passed, and I wanted to let her go rest, but it was as if we couldn’t stop talking. We told her everything. About Sela. How we lost her. That it had been four long years of mourning and we and our wolves were ready to move on.

Time for me to take a chance.

“Haven, I know this is fast, but are you interested in us because I think I can speak for the both of us when I say we absolutely are.”
