Another blush. Each one felt like a gift. “I am interested. Very. But from what I’ve seen in other matches, the female, especially with numerous males, she goes to meet them. Stay with them. But I can’t do that. I can’t leave my job. My career isn’t one that can be handled remotely. I have to be here.”

Chapter Nine

Fitz

“Haven, we need one minute. I know it’s late but can we put you on mute, sweetheart?” The pet name slipped out and, while I’d wanted to attribute the name to Sela, I had never called her by a pet name. She hated them.

“Of course.”

I muted the phone and, for certainty’s sake, put the phone under a pillow. “Talk to me, Collyn. Please, please tell me you are on the same wavelength as me. We’re in this together.”

“I have personal time. I haven’t taken a vacation or even called in sick since…”

He didn’t have to finish that sentence. “I do, too. But what about Sela? Last week, hell, three days ago, you were thinking you might not be ready. I doubted it as well.”

“Fitz, talking to her. Seeing her face-to-face, well, not face-to-face, but you know what I mean… We have to try.”

“So we’re going to her. We’re diving in.”

“Yes,” Collyn breathed. Enough for me.

I picked up the phone and caught Haven laughing. A sight for sore and lonely eyes. “What are you laughing at?” I had to ask. Had to learn what made her tick.

“Muting it did the trick, guys. There was no need to stuff me under a pillow or a blanket—whatever that was.”

We laughed along with her.

“Well, while you were in hiding,” Collyn began to speak, “we decided that we are able to come to you. We want to come to you.”

My heartbeat sped up. All of this moving so fast. Still, it felt damned right.

Her eyes widened. Her big, blue oceans ticked from Collyn to me and back again. “Are you sure?”

I nodded. “We are sure. We have plenty of personal time and we haven’t taken time out in a long while. Is that okay with you? We won’t move forward unless all of this is okay with you.”

She worked her bottom lip between her teeth. Gods, the woman had a luscious mouth. “I meant it when I said I was interested. As much as I want you both to come here and we can explore all of this, I don’t want anything to happen to you—financially.”

Sweet, beautiful woman, worried about us. My wolf stirred inside me. He knew a loyal woman when he met one.

“You don’t have to worry about us,” Collyn took over. “We have savings and we are taking paid personal time off. We are going to get a rental near you, if you could shoot us your address. That way, we can…”

“No,” Haven cut him off.

“I thought you wanted us to come,” I said. My heart stuttered—stammering over a beat. My chest tightened. What in the hell was I going to do if she had changed her mind?

One video chat. One.

Haven had us hooked.

“I do. Gods, I’m tired. Sorry. What I mean is, I have this huge house. Sometimes, I swear, I get lost in it, it’s so big. I had a big ego back then and entirely too much money in my account. I thought I would be mated by now and have a family. I’m rambling. Anyway, it’s a ginormous house and my schedule is insane so this way, the amount of time we spent together would be maximized.”

“Because we would be at your disposal,” Collyn chuckled.

She cocked her head and then made a face as though she tasted something gross. “That makes it sound like something awful. Like I’m a demanding wench.”

“Trust us, female,” I started. “It’s not a bad thing to us—not one bit. If you are sure you’re okay with it, we would love to stay with you and see where this leads.”

“I want that, too,” she whispered, but her words were soon followed by a yawn.
