I tossed the phone down, a bit irritated at her arrogance over it all. “I don’t even know if I’m ready.”

“Eat more of the cookies. They will help. I have to answer some emails and go over your schedule for tomorrow.”

Tilly left, shutting the door to my office behind her. I leaned back in the chair, arms above my head, and forced a few long, deep breaths.

My wolf needed a mate, and she stayed ready for one.

My heart remained the problem. Jerome had hurt me. Five minutes of a date, and my heart was broken.

Maybe Tilly’s notion was right.

And maybe fear ruled my world now.

I reached for the phone and put my thumb over the app, intending to delete it and forget the whole thing. My life burst with so many things to do and get done.

Just as the app began to wobble, ready for me to delete it, a notification popped up on the top of the screen.

Collyn and Fitz had sent me a message. A video message.

My heart fluttered in my chest. Maybe not so broken after all.

Chapter Eight

Collyn

I would be lying if I said I hadn’t checked our messages all day. That damned app and my own imaginations of Haven had taken over my senses completely.

Thank goodness for work. It kept me busy and, while I tried to keep my thoughts occupied, they were already busy with our maybe match.

Once I got home, I found Fritz in his home office, looking the worse for wear.

“Everything okay?” I asked. Usually, when I walked in, he had either made dinner or ordered in. Didn’t matter which to me, but he was at his desk, in his pajamas, and his head in his hands.

He cracked up at me asking, “The truth? I have no clue. I haven’t done a damned thing all day. I can’t concentrate. Can’t even…” He pushed back in his rolling chair and threw his hands in the air.

“Haven?” I asked.

He smiled. “It’s a beautiful name. And…I’m not the only one, right? I haven’t been so preoccupied—not since Sela. We haven’t even heard her voice and I’m twisted up.”

“I’m right there with you but I’m also starving. What do you want for dinner?”

He perked up at that. “I was thinking about Greek earlier, but the time got away from me.” Looking down, he snorted. “Didn’t even make it out of my pajamas.”

Fitz usually was one for routine and rituals that he swore pulled him out of the hole he’d dug for himself after Sela.

Most days, I thought I was still in that hole with him.

And her.

“I’ll call the delivery in before I shower.”

I started for my bedroom, ordering our usual along the way, when a message popped up on my screen—right as I’d completed the order.

“Collyn?” Fitz ran out of his room even less dressed than he was before, phone in hand. “She messaged back.”

“Who?” I said but couldn’t contain my laugh.

“Stop fucking around. Let’s look at it together.”
