We both went quiet, our breathing the only sound in the room beyond the noise of the street outside. My head was spinning with thoughts of everything that had happened–Carmen’s potential betrayal, Tristan’s second revocation of his offer to marry me.

Then I looked at him, my eyes hardening.

“Tristan…I know you might not want this, but I need to remind you that you have to marry me.”

He scowled, brow furrowed. “I don’t have to do anything, Ade.”

“Yes, you do.” I kept my tone measured. “Because if you don’t…then my father is going to kill you.”

He thought about that for a second. “If I have to kill your sister, he’ll probably try to do that anyway.”

I swallowed, feeling choked by the stillness of the air around us. “And what are you going to do?”

He thought for a second before he narrowed his eyes. “I guess I’ll just have to kill your dad before he kills me.”
