Crunch.

Something in my ribs gave way. Agony ripped through me, blinding until I couldn’t breathe. He was a shadow, rearing over me, sucking in hard breaths as he dropped down and straddled me.

“I’m not the one dying here.” He said as he wrapped his hands around my throat. “You are.”

Flickers of images filled my mind.

The image of my hands around another as I killed to protect the woman I loved. I tried to shove against the floor, knowing this was the end if I didn’t move. I drove my feet against the floor, bucking my hips into the air. He fell sideways, his hold on my throat dragging me with him.

Until Hunter slammed into him with a guttural roar.

Bang!

A shot tore through the room. But I didn’t have time to even care if I was hit. If I was moving, then I was fighting. I shoved against the floor, driving myself to where my brother raised his massive fist and drove it into the face of my attacker. But he was slow…and weak.

I unleashed a roar, dropped low, and rammed my body into the guard. Blinding, shooting, white-hot bolts of lightning tore through me. I couldn’t breathe…couldn’t think. Still, reflex took over. Helene’s face filled my head.

As I swung my fist, all I saw was her.

Bang!

I bucked and stumbled sideways.

Deep down, I knew there was no escaping death this time, not as that punishing pain grew bolder, radiating from my thigh. Still, I stumbled forward, grabbed the bastard who’d attacked us, and cracked my head forward, slamming into his face.

Crunch.

He dropped hard, tearing his shirt out of my hold as he collapsed to the floor in front of me. I turned to Hunter. “You good?”

He winced, glanced at the blood streaming from the guard’s face, and nodded. “Yeah.”

“Good.” I turned, to find Kane and Thomas battling two more of the motherfuckers with all they had.

But Thomas was still injured, spinning with the crack of a blow.

He stumbled and dropped to his knees. He drove out his hand to stop the fall and lifted his gaze.

The guard lifted his gun and pointed the muzzle at my brother kneeling on the floor.

I shoved forward.

“Don’t you fucking move!” He swung the Glock my way, taking aim at my chest.

I opened my hands and limped forward. That’s the way…aim that at me.

My knee shuddered, threatening to give way as I took another step. “There’s no way out of here.” I spoke carefully. “Not for you. Put the gun down and we’ll let you live.”

“Fuck you.” He swung his wide, panicked stare around the room.

“Hey!” I barked, drawing his focus again. “On me, motherfucker.”

The bastard jerked his focus back as I took another step.

“There’s nothing here worth dying for.” Kane urged, sucking in hard breaths from fighting. His lip was split, blood trailed from his nose. Still, he glanced my way and straightened, opening his hands. “Take a look around. There’s nothing here. Coulter took what he wanted, and he left you behind to die.”

“Shut the fuck up.” The dead man snapped.

He was dead either way.
