I shifted my gaze, finally seeing the sickening sight for what it was…it was blood and bone and emptiness. I couldn’t even release him, my knuckles were fixed around his shirt.

“Easy now.” Kane urged.

He knew I didn’t like that goddamn placating tone. Still, he used it.

I shook my head, shifting my focus to Hunter, who stood over the last guard lying dead at his feet, his neck canted at an unnatural angle.

Thomas stood on the other side of the room, staring at me in shock. It wasn’t something I enjoyed, to be inhuman and violent in front of my blood. Still, it had been necessary. I reached over and pulled my fingers to release their hold on the body’s shirty as the stony dust rained down even harder from above.

Boom!

The faint explosion was distant, but still chilling.

“We need to find a key.” Kane moved, dropping next to a guard. “Hurry! We need that goddamn key.”

But the moment he said the words, the ceiling came crashing down. I was hit from behind and slammed to the floor.

“Riven!” Kane roared.

But darkness slammed into me.

One minute I was awake…and the next I was out.

TWENTY-EIGHT

Helene

“GET THE FUCK OFF ME!” I tore out of Coulter’s arms and ran for my life.

But I couldn't see a thing, running blindly with my hands stretched out, until a roar came from behind me.

“Get her!” Coulter’s roar echoed all around me.

Footsteps followed, the heavy thud…thud…thudthudthud made my pulse race. But as they dragged me from that tight tunnel, a sickening crack had come from that room.

I stopped, stared into the darkness, and tried to understand what had just happened. My mind conjured terrifying bloody images. A bullet hole in the middle of Riven’s chest. Hunter falling with a neat hole in the side of his head. The images snatched the fight out of me, turning me to prey.

“There you are.” Coulter’s man yanked me backwards until he hauled me over his shoulder.

Fight!

FIGHT!

I kicked, feebly at first, before reality backhanded me across the face and I drove my fist into the side of his head over his ear. Snatches of the past rose with the movement. I’d hit Riven like that the night he’d abducted me, and as I remembered the hostile stare he’d given me, I knew I loved him.

I’d give anything to earn that wrath once more.

But this wasn’t Riven…this was someone far worse.

“Put me DOWN!” I bucked until I ripped from his hold and fell, hitting the floor hard.

Agony cut through my thigh and tore into my back. But I didn’t have time to care. I shoved upwards, my feet slipping on the slick stone floor. I crashed back down. The cold, throbbing agony found me again as tears filled my eyes.

Get to them…

GET TO THEM!

But the moment I lunged, the guard lunged to the side, tormenting me as I tried to find a way around him.
