He stopped instantly, and the guard followed, leaving me to catch my own footing. I gripped the guard’s arm around my chest, my pulse racing along with my breaths. Still, that howling desperation filled me.

“I’ll do it.” I whispered, my stomach sinking. “I’ll do whatever you want.”

His eyes glinted in the gloom as they fixed on me. I had him. I really had him. Please…I whispered. Please.

A slow, deep chuckle spilled from his mouth and resounded all around me. “If you had anything to bargain with, I might be tempted. Might, being the operative word choice there.” He took a step, coming closer, and leaned down until I flinched away. “But if you haven’t noticed already, Helene, you’re already mine.”

“No.” I shook my head, that fear building inside.

“I can’t stop thinking about that night.” Coulter murmured. “I can’t seem to get you out of my head.” I jerked away from his touch as he brushed a coil of my hair around my ear. “I plan on getting reacquainted very soon, Helene.”

My body trembled. “I-I’ll fight y-you.” I stuttered.

I sounded like someone else at that moment, someone weak and full of terror.

“I really hope you do.” He answered and stepped away, nodding to the guard at my back. “I look forward to it.”

I shook my head. This couldn’t be happening. “NO!”

Moonlight spilled into the entrance of the tunnel, the faint glow growing brighter until we were finally out and I was cast aside and thrown to the ground.

I hit the dirt and the sticks hard, landing on my hands and knees. Agony throbbed along my thighs. But I curled my fingers, digging into the dirt, and shoved upwards. My movements were slow, the drug still lingering in my system, making me stumble as I swung around and lunged for the tunnel.

But the guard was right in front of me, grinning as he sidestepped.

“You don’t want to go in there.” He shook his head.

“Get the fuck out of my way!” I screamed, desperately trying to find a way around him.

“You’ll miss all the fun.” Coulter gripped the CPU and stared into the gaping tunnel mouth. “Five…four…three…two…one.”

BOOM!

The detonation was brutal, quaking the ground beneath my feet. Leaves shook from the trees around us, falling like rain. I took a step, then had to throw out my hands to stop from falling. Car alarms blared to life all around the towering mansion.

“Look at that!” Coulter bellowed, his eyes wide, shining with excitement as he turned toward us.

All I could see was the suffocating dust that spewed from the mouth of that tunnel, imagining the men I loved crushed to death.

Even if they survived the collapse, there was no way they’d survive the choking air.

My knees finally gave way, crashing me to the ground. I sat there staring into the darkness, knowing this was the end. For them…and for me.

“Oh, come on now.” Coulter said above me. “Why the tears? Think of it this way, at least you finally got the revenge you wanted all along for your sisters. That is what you wanted, wasn’t it, Helene? That’s what your father told me, in confidence, mind you. He said you were planning on hunting The Principal, The Teacher, and the Priest for the vile things they did in those walls.”

My heart rippled with agony at the words.

Coulter came closer, standing over me. His hand landed on the back of my head, gently pushing me against his leg. “I am your savior, Helene. I am the one who reminded you of your true path. You wavered, but I was right there ready to make it right. You are mine, Helene. I knew the first time I saw you, Fate had brought you to me. A true Daughter of The Order, one perfectly made to be mine.”

“I’d rather die.” I whispered, meeting that stare.

Coulter slowly straightened, pulling his hand from my head before he stepped away. “I don’t pay good money for bad investments, Helene…instead, I hire that investment out to anyone willing to pay me over and over and over until I recoup my loss. You don’t want that, do you, Helene? You don’t want to be a bad investment.”

My body core clenched at those sickening words.

I knew exactly what he meant.

He’d whore me out to any fucking vile bastard who’d ever wanted a plaything of The Order.
