Again.

There was no way we were getting out of there. No way we’d ever see the light of day again, until a cold, crisp burst of air hit me.

“Riven.” Thomas called as he stumbled onto a mound of rocks.

Grief weighed me down, but I lifted my gaze to where my brother pointed at the stone ceiling. “There.”

I couldn’t see a damn thing. But I could feel it, and the moment I breathed in that clean, night air, I pushed upwards. My feet slipped on the rocks as I battled to get to him.

High above us, the glimmer of stars shone through. “What the fuck is that?”

Thomas smiled, his grin growing wider by the second. “That, brother, is a sign.”

I hadn’t believed in miracles, not until one stepped in front of my car. But if I believed in her, then I guess I believed something was out there beyond all of us. I lowered my focus to the looming stone wall in front of me. But there was still a mountain to climb.

“We just need to find a way out of here.” Thomas added.

He had his faith and I had my rage. One I tapped into now as I stumbled forward and bent down, grasping the boulder at my feet and tore it from the wall.

Hold on, Trouble…just hold the fuck on.

We’re coming.

THIRTY

Helene

Headlights splashed across the ground at my feet as a sleek black sedan pulled up behind us and the car doors opened.

“Get her to the car.” Coulter commanded and stepped away.

I jerked my gaze to the mouth of that tunnel as a fresh wave of agony tore through me. I’d give anything to kick and fight and claw my way through the destroyed tunnel back to them. Even if they’d survived the blast, even if they’d crawled out of that room, they’d never get through the destroyed tunnel.

“Helene.” Coulter murmured. “Your sister is waiting.”

A shiver raced along my spine as I thought of her at the hands of these vile pieces of shit. I’d give anything to fight for the men I loved, but my sister needed me more.

It took all my strength to turn away and ignore the smug curl of Coulter’s lips as I stepped toward the waiting car. The guard crowded me, gripping my arm as he drove me to the waiting open back door. But he needn’t have bothered, there was no fighting, not anymore.

I climbed in and slid across to the other side before Coulter followed. The guard shut the door, then climbed into the front while the driver slipped behind the wheel. We were pulling away before I knew it. That consuming pang of agony made me turn and look behind us. The clump of towering trees where we’d left was empty. But it was the mansion that drew my focus and the jagged edge of the stone wall that had caved in.

“Don’t worry.” Coulter muttered. “I have plenty more mansions for you to despise.”

My stomach sank at the words. I fought the desperate need to lunge for the door and throw myself out of the car…even if it was moving.

My fingers curled, aching for the feel of a cold, steel razor. Anything to find some kind of…

You seek release. Kane’s words were conjured from the past. You crave that rush. Let us be that for you now. Use us, take whatever you need.

I turned away from the ruins and clenched my fists until my knuckles ached. Trees blurred outside the tinted windows as we flew down the long driveway and turned. But that need for the razor had died away. I had let them fill that hunger. I’d let them fill that void inside with their darkness and control.

Only now…that was over.

Coulter reached over and grasped my arm with one hand and the inside of my thigh with the other, then yanked me across the leather seat until I slammed hard against him. His hand stayed on my thigh as the car accelerated, skirted the heart of the city, and headed north.

The city lights sparkled, a couple laughed as they walked hand in hand along the street. They may as well be another galaxy away from where I sat with that monster’s hand possessively on my thigh. “Where are you taking me?”

“Someplace they’ll never come looking for you.”
