A shiver of fear ripped through me as the city lights grew sparse and finally fell far behind. Darkness crowded in and the towering apartment buildings and sparkling clubs were gone. Out that far, there was nothing but the highway. Cold moved through me and goosebumps raced up my arms, making me shiver. Coulter spread his fingers wider, the heat of his palm melting into my thigh.

“Don’t worry. You’ll be warm soon enough.” He captured my chin and turned my gaze toward him. “You are mine now, Helene. Every scream of rage and agony that comes from these beautiful lips belongs to me. You will learn I can be a gentle master, if you obey.”

I yanked away from his hold. “And if I don’t?”

Those infernal eyes hardened. “Then this…partnership will be very hard on you. Very hard indeed.”

I shivered, even though his hand was hot like a brand on my thigh. Hard on me? That’d been his threat. I knew better than anyone exactly just what he was capable of and that chilled me to the bone.

Headlights glinted against the towering ten-foot fence surrounding a facility the government owned outside the city, but as we skirted the barrier to whatever they kept away from prying eyes, I felt the sedan slow.

“What the fuck is going on?” I murmured, glancing at the driver.

He met my panicked stare in the rear-view mirror before pulling into the military base and stopped outside the guard hut. I looked behind us as a car drove past. The window rolled down and the driver handed over ID to the armed soldier, who grabbed the card, scanned the details, and stepped closer to glance into the back seat.

Help me!

Please, help me!

The scream rose as the soldier gave a nod. “Mr. Coulter.”

“Open the gate, Morgan.” Coulter demanded. “Have the others arrived?”

“Yes, sir. About thirty minutes ago.”

Coulter just gave a nod and settled back against the seat. “Good.”

The guard stepped away, allowing the window to rise as the gate in front of us rolled open.

WARNING

U.S. PROPERTY

NO TRESPASSING

VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED.

I stared at the warning signs as the car rolled through the gate and accelerated. I looked behind us at the guard hut as it disappeared. “What the hell is this?”

My captor just met my stare, saying nothing. This couldn’t be happening…this couldn’t be...someplace they’ll never come looking for you. That’s what he’d said.

He'd told the truth.

No one would look here.

After all…this was the government we were talking about. The car swept around a rise and dipped into a valley until I saw the bright lights of some kind of huge hangar, with the nose of a sleek jet peeking out as it slowly headed for a landing strip.

Vivienne…

Vivienne was on that plane.

“No.” I whispered and lunged across the seat, clawing the door handle as the car came to a stop.

“Sir?” The guard barked as I clambered free.

“Let her go.” Coulter commanded.

I didn’t care, wild horses couldn’t have held me back.
