The soldier grabbed my arm, his fingers bruising. “Sorry, sir.” He gave me a hard yank. “This one got away from me.”

“Did she now?” Hale’s brow rose.

“Take her to the house.” Coulter commanded, striding toward us.

He handed over a CPU to Hale as the glare of headlights came through the open door of the hangar.

“No!” I shook my head, staring at that drive in Hale’s hand as the soldier dragged me backwards. “You can’t fucking do this! YOU CAN’T DO THIS!”

But they just stood there, watching me with that same almost amused stare like this was…entertaining to them.

“Fuck you!” Tears blurred those smug stares. “FUCK YOU!”

The solider yanked me hard again, making my head snap forward, and I bit my tongue. The heady taste of blood bloomed in my mouth. I swallowed it down, along with the pain and the burn in the back of my throat.

A black Mercedes four-wheel drive pulled up. The engine died and the driver’s door opened. I caught sight of Harmon as the driver climbed out and opened his door. He lifted his gaze as he stepped out, catching sight of me as the soldier thrust me forward.

There was no humanity in his eyes. No warmth. No…nothing. Just greed and power and the kind of depraved detachment only men like him could have.

“Walk or I’ll drag you by the fucking hair.” The solder barked.

I stumbled forward, leaving them behind, turned my focus to where we were heading, and realised this was no military compound. This was a lie.

A house loomed in the distance, sprawling and commanding and curled around the private landing strip. But as I was pushed toward that house, I caught movement in the dark. The soldier yanked my arm, stopping me instantly. Out of the darkness they came. Two men, moving soundlessly, split up and flanked us.

“Daughter.” One of them murmured.

But it was the soldier who reacted, stiffening and watching them from the corner of his eye. “You were supposed to be gone.” He said carefully.

A shudder raced through me as the two men came closer, moving with sleek, soundless, purposeful strides. I knew instantly who they were.

They were Sons.

“And you were supposed to be reassigned.” One of them said. “I told you the next time I saw you, it would be the last.”

I yanked my arm from the soldier’s hold and took a step backwards, until I slammed into another of them, one I hadn’t even seen at my back. I spun around, meeting a threatening stare. A surge of adrenaline tore through me at the connection. My body reacted instantly, slowing my breaths as he looked at me.

“I’ve never seen you before.” He murmured, searching my eyes. “What is your name?”

“Helene.” I answered instantly.

I’d never had that kind of reaction to a male before. I’d never felt so…obedient.

“Helene.” He slowly repeated.

The shiver that raced through me moved deeper until it felt like I was freezing. He lifted his hand, brushing the back of his curled fingers against my cheek. The contact was electric.

“I don’t think—” The soldier started.

The Son in front of me moved faster than I’d ever seen before, lunging forward to grab him around the throat. “Do you wish to finish that sentence?”

The soldier’s eyes widened. Fear shone before he shook his head. One hard shove and the Son pushed him away.

“I’ll be seeing you, Helene.” He swung that ravening stare back to me, taking in every contour of my face, before he stepped backwards and turned away.

They were gone in an instant. Here one minute and gone the next. For a second, I didn’t move…I couldn’t.

“Goddamn motherfuckers.” The soldier snarled and straightened. “Think they fucking run the place.” He jerked that savagery my way. “What the fuck are you looking at?”
