“Thanks,” I murmured as I winced again.

Those predatory eyes were fixed on me as I searched the kitchen and yanked out the cutlery drawer. But he didn’t watch me like he wanted to attack. No, he made no move to come near me at all and that quiet, controlled presence seemed to ease the panic inside me.

I poured and stirred, then rinsed the spoon under the tap and placed it on the sink edge. He grabbed his coffee and headed back around the counter, walking slowly enough that it was a command on its own…follow.

So I did.

We headed through the house, stopping as he unlocked the front door and left it open for me. The night waited. I had no idea what time it was…late or early, either way, I shivered, gripped my coffee, and followed him to the other building.

It felt safe here. The mountain hiding us; the gate keeping us safe. Hunter moved silently, opening the door to the separate building, leaving me to follow. My steps stuttered at the entrance. Lights clicked on inside, showing the way.

I bet it was more for my sake than his.

The man moved like a ghost.

A deadly.

Vengeful.

Ghost.

I stepped inside, leaving the door open, and scanned what looked like a massive armory. Guns, vests, knives, and grenades lined the wall on one side, two-ways and satellite tracking units on the other. Everything in there was precise, gleaming, and very expensive.

His heavy steps thudded up a set of stairs. I looked up, then followed, tracking his movement as he headed further toward the front of the building. But the moment I stepped onto the landing, I realized this was no normal building.

It was a command center.

My feet made no sound on the tiled floor as I approached and stared at the bank of monitors.

“What the fuck?” I whispered, coming closer.

He moved like I didn’t exist, placed his coffee on the curved desk in front of him and pulled out a chair, taking a seat in front of the displays. I stared at the screens, finding satellite views of houses that looked faintly familiar.

London’s.

Riven’s.

Mine.

I froze, then glanced his way as he punched in details to a computer then sat back, grabbing his coffee, taking a sip, watching the screen fill with information.

“You were spying on me?”

He looked my way, those unflinching eyes behind the mask having no trouble finding me.

Of course he watched me.

It wasn’t just houses, though. He had a whole screen divided by external cameras aimed at The Order. But next to that…was a camera showing the interior hall. I froze. My heart was hammering as heat rushed to my cheeks.

He could see everything.

A sting came across my hand. “Owww.” I jerked my gaze down to the trembling cup spilling hot coffee over my thumb. I sucked in a hard breath as he slowly glanced my way. I carefully placed the cup down on the counter and sucked the scalding liquid from my hand.

Then froze.

Beside the monitor divided by four interior cameras was one screen…showing one recording alone. I recognized the inside of Kane’s office instantly.

Pause.
