That bloody blotch on her white t-shirt grew larger. I stared at the mess, refusing to recognize it as a sign for whatever terror was coming.

They couldn’t leave.

I wouldn’t let them.

I took a step, my legs wanting to shake and my mind hazy.

“No.” I took another step forward, moving between them and their salvation.

Out there was our deaths.

I knew that.

And I couldn’t allow that to happen.

“You’re not going anywhere.” I faced them and clenched my fists. “Not alive, at least.”

THIRTY-SEVEN

Riven

Find them.

Car alarms unleashed deafening squeals. Glaring orange lights flashed, lighting the way as we flew through the city streets, headed only God knew where.

The words still lingered, entwined in the desperation that howled like a fucking animal inside me. My hand was clenched around the edge of the window of London’s car as he hunched behind the wheel and drove like a madman.

It’s the babies…I winced and focused on the blur of movement outside as the Son’s tormented stare filled my mind. It’s the babies.

Thud.

The crunching blow came from the side of an expensive Mercedes parked outside an apartment block and another blaring sound was added to the mix.

“Jesus.” I muttered, staring at the blur of a shadow.

I could barely see the Son as he ran along the city street faster than anything I’d ever seen in my entire life. I looked at the speedometer and the inching numbers as they crept higher. An ache moved through my chest. He couldn’t keep this pace up, not for long. A few minutes at least. Ten at the tops. Still, I glanced at that shadow as it pushed harder, the Son leaning forward as he hurtled toward his goal.

Wind from the open window whipped my hair into a snarl. Fragments of dust and dirt blew into my eyes, blurring them instantly. Goddamnit! I swiped my hand across my face, blinking away the grime until I saw him once more…running now on all fours.

What the hell?

Had he tripped?

Had the Son fallen?

I jerked my gaze to London, searching for any sign of worry. If anything, he seemed to be pushing the Explorer harder.

“Maybe we should—” I started.

“No.” Came the command from the backseat.

Carven sat behind me. Kane, Thomas, and Hunter were in the Explorer, behind us, whose headlights were blinding in our rear-view mirror. I hoped to God they were seeing this, because if I told them what was happening, they’d think I was insane.

But I wasn’t insane.

I was…amazed.

We left the towering apartment buildings behind for the darkness of the trees and the night. The Son ran even faster, hunkered down on all fours.
