I shook my head, trying my best to cast the words aside once and for all and broke away from Hunter. “Stop…stop. This isn’t working.”

Kane’s hand stopped. Hunter dropped his hand instantly, tugging his mask back into place.

“What is it?” Kane asked.

I shook my head as a pang of pain filled my throat. Tears threatened to come. Maybe this was it. Maybe this was…over?

“Who are you?”

I flinched at the snarl and lifted my head. The room blurred, trembling with tears. Still, he sharpened…

“Well?” Riven urged as he stepped closer. “Answer me.”

There was that authoritative tone. Dark. Callous and unforgiving.

“Helene King,” I whispered, forcing the words free.

“Wrong.”

He stepped closer, never once glancing at the others.

“Try again. Who. Are. You?”

“Helene—”

“WRONG!”

I jumped at the roar. Hunter unleashed a low snarl, but then stepped aside, watching Riven as he came closer. Kane moved from behind me, making way for his eldest brother. Just like they always had.

Those steel gray eyes glinted. Hard breaths made his chest rise. I knew this man. I knew him. The tender brush of his fingers. I lowered my gaze to his mouth. Those lips. I knew those lips. Still…he was an enigma, tender one minute…dangerous the next.

Just like now.

Now he was very dangerous.

He stopped in front of me. But there was a flicker of something behind that callous stare. A need that hadn’t been there before…before us.

“Who are you?” he asked.

Just a nobody. A nobody who likes to come all over my fucking couch…

His snarl surfaced.

“Nobody.” The word was a whisper.

His lips curled, that spark in his stare igniting.

The moment I said it, the world and every ugly thing that had happened to me just…fell away.

“Again,” he demanded. “Who are you?”

“Nobody,” I whispered, but my voice was stronger.

I was nobody at that moment. No Daughter. No sister. I was nothing more than what he wanted me to be.

“And tell me this, nobody. Why the fuck are you still dressed?”

He surged forward, grasping me around the throat. His strong hand was not as big as Hunter’s but still…it felt more real than anything I’d ever felt before. He clenched tight, tight enough to cut off my airway, then eased his hold.
