“Easy,” St. James urged, helping one of the Daughters into the back. I almost didn’t recognize him with the stark white skulled balaclava over his face, black cargos, and a black, high-necked vest strapped with gleaming Sigs.

He helped them inside and turned his head, watching the Sons climb into one Explorer and Vivienne and the bodyguard into the other before he turned back.

I strode forward after they were all inside, gripped the edge of the cargo hold, and lunged. I pushed upwards and my boots hit with a thud. I watched the door close in front of me.

Then darkness.

Darkness and fear and underneath that, hope…

I turned around in the dark as the lock on the outside of the door slammed into place with a bang.

“Hunter,” she called. I closed my eyes for a second as my pulse boomed louder than it should.

“I’m right here.” I opened my eyes and stepped forward, finding her in the dark.

I’d know her anywhere.

Even in the back of a truck heading to our fate.

I reached out and my hand brushed hers as I murmured once more, “I’m right here.”

FIFTEEN

Helene

The truck bounced and jostled, throwing us around inside the back of the truck. I staggered and hit something hard and warm. His arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me against him. I reached behind for balance and felt the rush of his warm breath against my ear.

“I’ve got you,” the mountain at my back whispered.

Heat radiated from his body and into mine. In the terror and dark, that hunger still rose. I opened my hand, released my desperate hold on his pants, and gripped his thigh, my fingers sliding downwards.

“Keep doing that, Helene, and you’re going to take my mind off what I’m supposed to be doing here.”

My pulse raced at the thought of that.

All that power.

All that…

Hunger.

At the tips of my fingers.

I could make a man like that fall to his knees.

Still, I pulled my hand away, focusing on the darkness as the truck bounced, turning onto streets once more. The more I stared into the dark, the sharper my vision became, until I could make out the larger shapes inside the gloom. Two men crowded a small form. I didn’t need to call out to her to know it was Ryth. With both Nick and Tobias at her side, there was no way they were letting my sister out of their sight.

It was just how I needed it to be.

The last thing I wanted was my sisters dragged into this any more than they already were. But we’d had no choice. My heart still ached for the Daughter we’d left behind.

I’d held her hand and talked to her, trying to coax her into reality, but she’d refused to surface, staying instead in the darkness of her mind.

Get her to the table.

The memory of the nightmare surfaced. Midnight waves crashed, spilling into my mouth as I plunged down into the terror. My grip clenched around Hunter’s thigh. Somehow, he knew that was more than pleasure. It was survival. He moved closer, his hard body pressed against my back. The brush of his gun at my side made it feel all surreal.

You’re mine.
