Protect her.

That’s all that hummed in my veins, making sure she got out of this alive.

No matter what it took.

A soldier opened a side door leading into the garage, leaving the bitch to nod before she walked through.

“Through to the other side.” He pointed across the space and glared at the rest of us. “To that door.”

We had no choice but to follow as she strode ahead and stepped through the far door. I was almost there, almost to the door with Helene’s hand in mine, when she smiled and slammed the door shut behind her with a thud.

My ears suddenly ached, until they popped with a flash of pain. The entire room had sealed and a low hiss started, followed with a bitter tang in the air.

What the f?—

I spun around, searching high up for the vents where the sound came from.

“What the fuck is that?” London yelled.

And the blood drained from my face.

“Gas,” Nick roared, shoving Ryth to the ground under him. “That’s fucking gas!”

The door we’d passed through closed with a thud, the soft seal closing us in with that foul stench. I clamped my hand over Helene’s mouth. “Breathe slowly,” I demanded and pushed her low.

“You motherfuckers!” Tobias lunged, driving his shoulder into the glass door.

But the thing didn’t even shudder.

The bitch stepped closer, and pressed some kind of button beside the door. Her voice echoed through the speakers in the garage. “I thought you might appreciate the lengths we’re going to here.”

I took a step, feeling the garage waver. Hard breaths only drew whatever shit they were pumping through the vents deeper into my lungs. I tried to keep it together. “What the fuck did you say?” My words were slurred and felt strange.

“This is after all, your brother’s finest work,” she continued.

“What?” I whispered, standing in the middle of the garage as the lights went out and plunged us into darkness.

OWNED.

The word was neon white, somehow coming from the glass goddamn walls.

OBEY.

CONTROL.

A cold sweat raced along my spine making my gut clench. “No,” I shook my head. “No.”

But that bitch just smirked and slowly released the button.

“Fuck you!” Helene ran and lunged, slamming her fists against the glass. “Let us out. LET US OUT!”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Helene,” she said, her faint words reaching us even without a speaker.

Hunter unleashed a roar, then drove his shoulder into the glass along with Tobias Banks.

Chaos..

That’s all it was.
