I eased down, my ass hitting the leather seat. The make-up artist flinched as she stared at my face, then bent over, yanking wipes from a container and cleaned the mess that had cooled against my cheeks. A comb was tugged through my hair before it was swept up.

“No. This one stays as she is.”

The brunette stepped into the room and headed my way. “No hair, no makeup. I want them to see her raw.” She stopped beside the chair. “The others went fast, they were cheap. But I expect there’ll be a battle over you.” She gripped my chin, turning my face toward her. “So fucking exciting.”

I had no idea what she meant…but I knew it wasn’t good.

Her fingers dug into my arm, bruising as she yanked me forward.

“My sister,” I moaned to the redhead as I was dragged away. “Tell me…tell me where she is.”

“I’ll text it to you,” she answered before she laughed.

That revolting sound stayed with me as I was pulled out of the room and turned right before I was forced up three more stairs. The hushed murmur of voices reached me as a heavy black curtain was yanked aside and I was forced forward and plunged into darkness.

“Keep going,” she hissed.

Confused, I stepped forward until another set of heavy black curtains pulled away, leaving me standing in the center of a stage in the middle of a room filled with men and women sitting around tables at my feet.

“And here is the one you’ve been waiting for.” The brunette’s cruel grip tightened as she pushed me forward. “The problematic, pain in the goddamn ass known as Helene King. Now, I’m sure many of you have had your fair share of the kind of trouble this woman is notorious for…and don’t forget, she is the eldest daughter of the benefactor of tonight’s auction, Mr. Weylyn King himself. Where is he?” I couldn’t move as she searched the crowd, then stilled. “There he is. Stand up, Mr. King. Stand up and let everyone see how much this stunning woman here resembles you.”

Fear froze me to the spot.

All I saw were glinting lights and flickering candles.

Then there was movement…and in the back of the room a shrouded figure cloaked in shadows rose.

The drug that still raged in my system did little to dull the pain that ripped through my chest.

Lights glinted behind him, casting his face in darkness. But I didn’t need to see it to know who the man was. Recognition raged inside me.

“So do we have anyone who would like to start the bidding?”

I couldn’t even look at her as she spoke.

“Two million!” a man from the back called out.

“Three million” someone in front countered.

Ice ran through me at the sight as the man rose from his seat. I tore my focus from the man who was once my father to this man…and a ripple of terror tore through me.

I know him…I tried to fight the haze in my head. I know him…I know…

My body clenched. My pulse roared as he adjusted his tuxedo jacket.

“Coulter” the bitch at my side murmured. “I was wondering when you were going to spend your money.”

I shook my head. “No.” I stumbled backwards. “No.”

Until I hit something big and hard. I spun around, coming face to face with a massive guard.

“Come on now, Helene,” Coulter called from his table. “We were friends once. I’m sure we can be friends again…after all…you left my men desperate to get reacquainted.”

The guard grabbed my arms and forced me backwards.

Instinct took over, causing me to yank my foot back and lash out, driving my heel into his knee. A crunch filled the air. He went down, grabbing his knee and roaring. All I saw was the darkness as I lunged.

“Stop her!” the brunette screamed.
