They were coming for me.

There was a damn good chance I wouldn’t survive. But I couldn’t think about that now. All I cared about was Helene. I turned my head, working the keys between my teeth and rose up on my toes, but still, I couldn’t get close. My hands were numb and throbbing. But I gripped the cuffs and heaved with all I had.

The tendons in my arms were screaming as I inched the key in my mouth to the lock. The tip slipped into the lock. I shoved my entire body forward, driving it all the way inside, then twisted my head, snapping open the lock.

My dead hand dropped. For a second, I couldn’t move. Then adrenaline hit me. I jerked my gaze to the hallway, then hurriedly yanked the key from the cuff and worked the other.

Until I dropped like a stone to the floor. Agony was a sledgehammer blow through my knees. But I shoved upwards and lunged for the doorway, skidding as I stopped at the pool of blood around the guard.

His gun was all I wanted. I bent over his body and yanked his weapon free, then turned to the others. I snatched a second weapon and an access card free before I shoved upwards.

Minutes…that’s all I had now.

Those I was losing fast.

I stumbled, then pushed into a run, heading to where I didn’t know. I ran past the open door of another room, one that haunted me. They were here, that’s all I knew. I felt it in the pit of my stomach. Darkened steps rose to my left as I raced along the corridor. The faint sound of a voice called out. A female’s voice…

I climbed, taking them two at a time until I slammed face first into a heavy black curtain. Panic roared. I thrashed, slapping the goddamn thing from my face and stumbled as I slipped through.

“GET THE FUCK OFF HER!” Kane’s roar hit me instantly.

I gripped the gun, that merciless hunger burning as I headed for the sound. Helene’s muffled screams rang out, as did the excited murmurs of the others in the room. I slammed into the second black curtain, throwing it aside as my brother howled his fury.

Faces…that’s all I saw.

There were fifty or sixty of them all sitting at tables. I swept my gaze around the room, narrowing in on my brothers.

“I’LL FUCKING KILL YOU! I’LL FUCKING KILL YOU! I’LL KILL YOU ALL.” Kane bucked and screamed, with his hands bound behind him. Thomas sat there, staring wildly around the room, searching for a way out.

“Four million,” my sister called, drawing my focus to the table where they held Helene down. “Do I have anything higher? Four million…going once…going twice.”

Then I saw him as he slowly rose from the seat in front of her…Coulter.

Rage ripped through me. Consuming, ravening rage.

I lifted the gun, taking aim just as Thomas suddenly shoved upwards, tearing away from the guard at his back. His eyes were wide, fixed on movement that came from the corner of the room.

“Going three times,” my cunt of a sister called out.

I saw the movement as men dressed in black invaded. The fuck you are! I ground my jaw, wrenching my attention back to Coulter and took aim again.

Until Helene moved, stepping right into my path. I froze, watching her scan the crowd, then she stopped.

Something sailed through the air.

BOOM!

The detonation was brutal. Men and women flew through the air. Chairs became missiles slamming into those sitting outside the last zone.

BOOM!

I lunged as more were thrown forward. Screams followed. Chilling, shrill screams that grew in crescendo. All I cared about was her, and my brothers a close second. With my pulse booming in my ears, I lunged from the stage, my frantic eyes scanning the table where Helene had been a second ago.

Kane charged forward, slamming into a man in his way. Thomas was a second behind him, his gaze lifting to find mine.

“Riven!” he screamed.

Crack!
