My brothers were next, their hands still cuffed behind them, leaving them to slide along the edge and slowly push to their knees. I hauled myself up, my body shaking with the effort. “We need to get you out of those cuffs.”

A piercing female scream came from behind the curtain. I shot forward, shoving it aside. But I was no white fucking knight…not for her at least. “Let’s go, baby. Back the way you came.”

Helene moved fast, scurrying back through the second curtain before my brothers followed. The thud of her feet on the stairs was the only thing I tracked.

“Please…” I whispered as Thomas shoved past, careening after her, followed by Kane. “Let us make it out of here alive.”

TWENTY-TWO

Helene

My knees buckled as I hit the last stair. Still, I kept going, slamming my hands against the wall to push off once more.

“Who the fuck were they?” Kane barked close behind me.

Screams still filled the cramped air all around us, coming from those still fighting for a way out, and others fighting for their lives.

“Sons.” Riven grunted as all four of us hurtled along the hallway.

There was a man dressed in a tux and his companion standing in our way. He swiveled as we raced toward him.

“Don’t…” he lifted his hand, his eyes wide. “Don’t!”

Bang!

I stumbled, careening forward as he crumpled to the ground in front of me, blood instantly seeping through his white shirt. His companion just sucked in a massive breath and unleashed a scream that resounded through my head.

“Hey!” Kane grabbed her, yanking her forward. “That piece of shit deserved to die, maybe you do too. I don’t know. But what I do know is that if you don’t get out of here right now, you’ll be following him. Do you understand?”

She jerked those wide eyes up to him, the piercing scream dying instantly. She glanced behind him at the man who’d just killed her partner and sucked in hard breaths.

“So I suggest you start looking for a way out of this.” Kane lowered his gaze to the dead rich fuck. “Then, if I were you, I’d clean out the fucker’s bank accounts.”

That made her snap to attention. She looked down at her dying lover, then lunged, tearing past us with a renewed desperation to get out of there.

“Always the fucking same.” Kane muttered, gripping my arm gently and drove me forward. “Keep going, baby.”

We left them behind, making our way along the hallway and past the rooms they’d kept us in. Three guards were dead outside the open door where they’d had Riven handcuffed and chained like a goddamn animal. I glanced over my shoulder before I glanced at the gaping wound in the guard’s neck after being sliced from ear to ear. Maybe an animal is exactly what was needed.

We kept hurrying until gunfire came in the distance.

“Stop.” Riven growled. “We all can’t be out in the open like this.”

Kane’s grip tightened as he turned. “What are you suggesting?”

Riven glanced at a small hallway up ahead. “I think Helene and Thomas should wait here until we find a way out of here. All of us stumbling around this fucking place makes us sitting ducks in the open.”

I shook my head. I didn’t like that idea. We needed to stay together, especially because I still couldn’t get my head cleared. I winced, feeling the hallway blur around me.

“It’s safer this way.” Riven brushed his fingers along my jaw. “We’ll be back before you know it.”

He didn’t give me any chance to argue, just turned to Kane, then glanced at Thomas. “Protect her.” He commanded before he turned away.

One nod from Kane and he followed, leaving us behind. I tried not to look at Thomas, feeling the weight of his stare. Instead, I slid along the wall, slipping deeper into the mouth of the hallway.

How long would they take?

I closed my eyes and prayed. I just wanted to get out of there. I just wanted to?—
