“Carven?” I whispered, taking in the blood splatter across his cheek, then looked at his hands. “What the hell happened?”

He gripped a block of explosive with bloodied hands.

I knew exactly what he’d done.

He’d killed one of those who’d come to destroy everything.

He didn’t answer, just looked at Tobias, his brow rising with an unspoken question as he lifted his hand.

“No.” I shook my head. “No, you can’t. You’ll kill them.”

The keypad wrapped around the brick of C4 was brand new, the numbers fresh and black, shimmering in the faint light.

“How?” I whispered.

“How do you think?” He said, looking down.

“Who are they?” Riven asked.

Those blue eyes were crystal clear as he answered. “Rogue Sons who are only after one thing.”

Riven stiffened and his skin went pale as he glanced toward me.

You, come with me. The Son had commanded. Riven had stopped him. She doesn’t belong to you. This one is mine.

She’s a Daughter, isn’t she? The Son had asked, turning those cold, killer eyes to me.

A shiver tore through me as I lifted my gaze from that block of C4 in Carven’s bloody hands. What kind of man did it take to kill a born killer? A more determined one…that’s what.

“It’s the only way.” Carven answered as the tunnel rumbled and shuddered around us.

“Do it.” Tobias croaked. “Whatever you need to do, just do it. Get us the fuck out of here.”

“You know this could kill you, right?” Carven met his stare.

Tobias looked over to where Nick cradled Ryth’s head in his lap, then he turned back. “Set it up. Don’t start the timer until we’re ready.”

I shook my head…no…no…no. I wanted them out but not like this. Tobias stepped away, then knelt beside her. “Little mouse, we need to move you. It’s going to hurt. But you’re strong, you’re so fucking strong. I know you are. I watched you give birth to our son.”

She looked up at him, then gave a nod. Nick eased out, holding her head like she was made of glass. I guess to them, she was.

“I’m okay.” She croaked, holding onto him as he eased to his feet and picked her up.

“We need her against the far wall.” Tobias urged.

Carven went to work, placing the C4 against the door.

“Helene,” Riven gripped my arm and pulled me backwards. “Baby, we need to step back.”

It was the last thing I wanted to do. Still, I let him lead me away, further back along the tunnel where we’d come from and let Carven work.

This wasn’t right. None of it. But as I stepped backwards, the image of our father’s face came back. My throat tightened, thickening until it was hard to breathe. My betraying goddamn father. There were no words he could say that could justify any of this.

The truth was as annihilating as the explosive Carven fixed to the front of the cell door.

“Trouble.” Riven pulled me back a little further.

I let him draw me into his arms and turn me around. My arms went around his back as he pressed me against the stone wall out of the blast zone.
