Page 89 of Loving Liam

Mama had hugged us both, and Liam had cried. He loved her as much as I did, and I’d often find him chatting with her on the phone when I returned from work.

I had a proposition for him, though, and had been waiting to talk to him. At home, too many things grabbed his attention, but this holiday, there’d be nothing.

Just him and me.

“Are you okay, John?” he asked as we sat in our seats.

“I’m good. Looking forward to getting there and relaxing for the first time in ages.”

Work had been busy. I wasn’t getting any younger and wanted to stay home with Liam more and more, spend time with him while I still had the energy.

I’d lost some weight. Liam cooked more often than not. No more microwave meals and takeaways. We complimented each other in ways we could never have imagined.

I loved my life with him. The sex was off the charts, and his now easy-going nature made life definitely worth living.

“I know it wasn’t easy to say goodbye to your parents. Hell, it wasn’t for me, and they’re not my parents.”

“They’re as much yours as mine. Mama has adopted you, and Pops loves the bones of you.”

He snorted. “Pops doesn’t like me at all.”

“Pops loves you. He just doesn’t show it, but I know how he feels. He’d protect you the same as he would me. You’re like a son to him.”

Tears filled his eyes again, and I handed him a tissue.

“No more tears. We’re going to have a fabulous couple of weeks in paradise. This year will be ours, Liam.”

He put his head on my shoulder. “I’m tired, Daddy. Going to have a nap.”

It was early. Well, early for Liam. While with my parents, he’d taken to sleeping in. I’d lay in bed watching him, wondering what on earth I’d done to deserve him.

“Sleep, sweetheart. I’ll wake you when we arrive.”

Two days later, we’d just had another session, our sweat-soaked bodies entwined. Liam’s sexual appetite was insatiable, and I was going to need a day off to recover.

“You know, when we get home, I want to make some changes.”

Liam’s breath hitched. “Have I upset you?” He placed his hand on my chest.

“No, sweetheart. Nothing like that.” This had been a hard decision for me, but one I needed to make.

“Then what is it?”

“I’m leaving the force.”

He sat up, shock on his face.

“But you love it. You always said it was your family, and what about Sam?”

“It is, or it was. I’ve talked to Sam about it. My heart isn’t in it anymore, and now, well, I have someone else who’s my family, someone else I love more than the job.”

“Do you mean…?”

“Yes, Liam. I mean you. I love you and want to spend as much time with you as I can. I’m giving it all up.”

“Don’t do it for me.”

“I’m doing it for us. You have shown me there’s so much more to life than work. I never thought I’d ever find someone who’d give my life meaning. I used to think it was my job, but now…I want you, Liam.”
